I've been testing the SSL Alpha VHD for about two weeks, together with a Daking Mic Pre IV. And the Daking won by much! The VHD is cool as insert to fatten up some synths but for tracking drums and guitar (elec. + ac.) I prefer the charachter of the Daking. It is all about what you are in to but for recording I can sure miss the VHD-function. ... Btw, the Daking has tons of gain, important when you are recording with ribbons. The SSL has a lot less gain and some people have doubts the VHD could manage ribbons.

I'm curious about the SSL VHD too. Seems to be an affordable way to have the SSL badge on my studio's front end. 4 SSL PRE's for $1.7k - no brainer. I was told by an SSL rep the pres were same exact circuits from larger SSL boards. I can't wait to audition the VHD.
