What's your favorite snare sound? Drum Machines & Samplers
Old 8th October 2009

I'm fully prepared to get completely torn apart here:

Metallica - St.Anger

It's like a slap in the face every time Lars hit that snare. It was something unique, which is so refreshing to hear in modern music. I completely loved the raw feeling of that album.

At the same time though, I respect how everyone else could hate it. But hey, At least the mix wasn't compressed to hell!!

Correct, and I love that too! Tom Lord-Alge shotgun sample and compressed to hell but sounds amazing!

Then you'll like this too... I know it has some sort of hand clap mixed in, but this the crackiest crack snare sound ever!

Matt Chamberlain's work with Fiona Apple and Tori Amos has also yielded several discs worth of fantastic snare sounds. Also check out his group "Critters Buggin".

Someone needs to update the Wallflowers entry on Wikipedia, where it says Mario was the drummer on that album. I guess I should have referenced AllMusic.

Lovedrug's snare always has a cool tone in all their songs... and it changes from song to song significantly... especially on the song "castling" when he hits the snare on the verses... sounds sick...

Bonham is a no brainer of course

Jack white can capture a great snare sound too... huge and fat, but with presence....

I love the snares on Jim Wirt's albums

and so many more records and engineers

I keep burning my brains and ears to get that pro sound, I'm afraid I still am so far away from that dammit

Actually I assisted on that mix and if memory serves, I don't believe we used a sample... Lots of compression... yes.

I didn´t follow the entire thread but:

I love the snare on George Dukes "Face the music" Especially track 1

Then Dennis Chambers snare sound on "Pick Hits Live" by John Scofield"

I also think the Chilly Peppers on stadium arcadium have a very nice snare (don´t like the album much though)

Trip! Also Back in the USSR.... I guess I'll have to read more on the Beatles... It still has the same sound overall... maybe the same kit?

Hate to be so mainstream in my choices but these are some of the first that immediately spring to mind.

"Breaking Glass" - Bowie
"Pride" - U2
"Don't Pass Me By" - The Beatles
"Glass Onion" - The Beatles
"Parachute Woman" - The Stones

My List...

I'm jumping in this one late, but the original post got me thinking so now I can't move forward until I throw my list out there:

Cheap Trick - Reach Out
Stone Temple Pilots - Flys in the Vaseline
Smashing Pumpkins - Cherub Rock
Rolling Stones - Let me go
Beatles - the whole 'Revolver' album
Stewart Copeland - Man in a Suitcase (Police - Zenyatta Mondatta)
...and of course, EVERYTHING John Bonham ever did...

Queens of the Stone Age has some killer snare sounds. I don't know how they did it, but they did it perfectly.

A LOT of Albini stuff- Jesus Lizard, Shellac, Brainiac etc-
Led Zep (duh)
Sparta- Wire Tap Scars
Battles- First record, forgot the name?
Hundred Reasons- IAOS
Refused- the shape Of Punk To Come
Future Of the Left- 1st album

I could go on, basically I like big ambient punchy snares that actually sound like real drums. Albini's general approach probably typifies it for me, at least for rock....

alot of great ones, and my faves have already been mentioned.

One that still comes to mind though is Vinny's snare on Ten Summoner's Tales.
His playing on "Seven Days" is so tasty, and he makes 5/4 feel so natural.

Well...

I'm inclined to say David Ben's snare on Riot! But I'm pretty sure that's a sample or....not entirely sure. There's some others that aren't samples that I liked, but I can't think of them at the moment.

Edit: Metallica's snare on St. Anger was pretty unique.

i like most of what's posted here.. obviously the snare is so " Signature " to the song and genre IMO. it all depends. saying what your favorite snare is almost like saying what your favorite music is, sorta. its not quite that easy, i mean snare sounds do cross genre's all the time. but i think you know what i mean.

some that come to mind to me :

NIN
Iamx
chemical bros
the crystal method
justice
does that offend you yeah
hybrid
icecube
gorillaz
LTJ bokkum
Amen breaks - see above
