This is one of my favorite snare sounds of all time...not to mention the kick drum as well.
This thread has come back from the dead not once but twice.

Second the above. Also Watts' snare sound on the recent (this decade) batch of tour DVDs - the biggest single sound in the mix, and, if you're watching, you'll note that for the most part he doesn't hit that hard. Technique is everything.

this answer is a little more obscure....

but the gospel artist "Israel & New Breed" (israel houghton) has a christmas album out called "A Timeless Christmas"... it is an incredible album!!!

Mike Clements on drums.... each track has a slightly different snare sound and they are all perfectly suited for the songs.

CHECK IT OUT!!!thumbsup

The live album by Peter Gabriel for the Secret World tour. Manu's snare sound so perfect to me.
And Copeland's snare on the Police albums

Adam Deitch gets AMAZING snare sounds! Check out the new album "Rage" from Lettuce (one of his many projects). Each song has a totally different snare sound and ALL of them are excellent. Apparently, that whole record was put down on ALL vintage gear, including the drums he used.

I know most of you really love that oldschcool open roomy snare sound.. Personally, I think the new Underoath album Lost in the sound of Seperation has some of the most innovative drum sounds I've heard.

Its uber punchy/compressed but it sounds glorious.

check it.

ok, maybe im an anomaly .

i dont give a crap. *shrugs*

i mean ya, i take the snare and EQ a bit, but ****.
if i'm worried about how the snare sounds......then i've done somthing wrong.

the song should rock, (or be banging) to where im grooving, not worrying about the snare.

but since the topic asked....

"back in black", mutt lange.

"kill you" eminem, Dr. Dre

"thriller" quincy jones

"chameleon" herbie hancock's 'head hunters' album

"you dropped a bomb on me" gap band

ok. thats enough

No point to this but I'll play anyway...

1) 'Black Hole Sun'

2) Phil Collins - on 'Nursery Crimes' and Brand X "Unorthodox Behavior"

3) Sean Pelton on Shawn Colvin's "Sonny Came Home" (Few Small Repairs)

4) Stewart Copeland on the FIRST Police album. Before his snare became a weightless little 'tick' and still had some meat...

5) The Clash 'London Calling' great snare sounds throughout. A KM84, I believe.

6) Tight up front snares on Bowies "Pin Ups". Aynsley Dunbar I think.

7) Gad on 'Aja'.

8) Bonzo on Djermaiker (or however the heck you spell it. too lazy to Google)

9) The detuned snares on Sam Phillips "Boot and a Shoe" album. Jim Keltner, among others...

10) Jerry Marotta on Gabriel's 3rd album. Or Hall and Oates H2O (same drummer, same period)

11) Nirvana 'Heart Shaped Box'

Ringo on the White Album, ie Dear Prudence. Nick Mason has a pretty sweet snare on Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here.

I like old muted snares with little to no sustain. the "old" sound. Oh yeah... anything Charlie Watts! "The best drummer is the one you don't notice because he/she blends so well"

Rare Earth "Get Ready" from the 1969 album of the same name has a great snare sound that is actually too loud in the mix, as is the tambourine - but what an excellent, crisp, poppy snare sound that is!! That's the 22 minute version of Get Ready, too....

I'm suprised how many people are naming classic songs too. I think all those snares in the 60s sound too colored for my tastes. Hardly sound like a snare. I like John Mayer - continuum snare sounds...and I really like the As Tall As Lions snare sound. especially in love, love, love.
