... as seen numerous times on Funky Monks? I was under the impression he recorded with a '58... this thing is a large, tubular mic, he's singing into it like a dynamic...

Um .. I was pretty young, but .. didn't that album come out like 5 years before the Distressor existed?

Mainly a sidecar full of 1073s, there was an Amek only for monitoring through.

Thanks guys, will have to check one out. There's a certain tonality to my voice that I sometimes hear in Kiedis's vocals, which when I record through a large diaphragm condenser just sounds... nasally :-( Trying a decent ribbon mic had always been on the list of must-dos, but earlier today as I was watching Funky Monks I noticed the mic he was using, I mean he was totally manhandling it like a live show and it just sounded perfectly natural and clear... the sound of him doing his takes being recorded on camera sounded exactly like what ended up on the album.

Off the subject a bit but still related.

I really like the Chillis but I've always though they could have been one of the greatest bands ever with a differnet singer!

Musically they are fantastic and he hasn't got a bad voice but could you imagine them with a really charasmatic frontman like Zack de la Rocha, Bono, Michael Hutchence.

He's good but a little bland and not stand out enough for me. Says it all that most average joes know the bass player more than the singer!

Well... He's a very charismatic frontman as far as stage prescence , but the vocals are just "whatever". Bu the's definitel comfortable in his own skin (or sock)

Noooo..Kiedis provides a massive vibe to that band that nobody else could do. Sure, he is not a great singer, but at the same time he is...he is unique and makes the band stand out. Just go see them live, and you will get it..he actually sung very well when I saw them a few months ago.

Anything live that I have heard of RHCP I've always been shocked at how "bad" Anthony's vocal quality is. As far as pitch goes.. I can't even get words out to describe his lack there of.

This is off topic, but how much has it have to suck for Flea to know that people are going to listen to their songs on laptop speakers- where you can hear the bass barely, if at all?

You can generally hear a bass guitar on laptop speakers...certainly the way flea plays it!

Anthony a bad singer?? OMG... Have you seen the band live??

Freaking spot on! And not an average range at all.

The charisma stuff is rather in the subjective realm... but a bad singer?

Give me a break...

Yeah right...

Incubus - Morning View Sessions (full concert) - YouTube

There are better singers? Sure... A tad flat on a few notes maybe... but far from a bad singer, and quite compelling IMO. Common KBD warriors... He's no Enrique Iglesias...

I agree that the rest of the band is otherwordly though. Try to sing with those guys mate... See who stands out then.
