why do we need another clone of a famous microphone?

just wanted to know, why people buy clones of microphones that are 40years or older.

there are very few companies that make microphones with their own sound and don't market them as "sounds like another U47"-copy.

please give me a hint, why someone would buy stuff, that is crap but states itself as the one and only copy of a popular mic.

if you go and buy a Mercedes, you wanna have the mercedes not the chinese Mercedes Clone.. or?hehheh

now.. kill me you Peluso-users out there

There seems to be a market in the upscale copies too:

The original U47s were some of the most wonderful sounding microphones ever made. They are not made anymore and there is a limited number of them in the world. Designers are trying to capture the magic of those mics and make that sound available to the people that do not have access to origianl U47s. (some are doing a better job of it than others)

Not sure what the conflict is?

Most electric guitars sold today were designed half a century ago. Is that bad?

The word "clone" is wrong cause new gear isn't anywhere that close to the original.

Variety is the spice of life... for example, musicians on the road may use women of all shapes/sizes/colors etc... They are all still women...

Perhaps not bad, but it is curious, especially since instrument and acoustic design has progressed since the 50's (at least the theory of it - certianly not the building of them i.e., the economics of handbuilding instruments like in the days of yore).

There was a great article recently in the New Yorker about this very subject, and can certainly apply to pro audio.

There's a link to it on Ken Parker's homepage:

I'd rather see a thoughtful manufacturer attempt to faithfully recreate a classic mic than some low end crap peddler like M-Audio try to name-drop their product into being compared to Neumann and Schoeps.

yeah, but the marketing-guys claim to have THAT wonderful 47 copy..

it's just a philosophical view..

never mind.

what about something like this:
CharterOak Acoustic Devices : Professional Audio Equipment for the Recording Industry

I love those mics, and they have their own sound.. yes it take some minutes to figure out, how they sound, but a true gearslut should take that time

cheers
