Good Distortion Plug-Ins?

Good Distortion Plug-Ins?

Looking for a general good sounding distortion plug-in to use mostly for vox but also for the occasional random application such as a drums mix or adding fuzz to bass. Basically I'm looking for something fuzzy, but not too bright and nasty. The only distortion that comes with digital performer is their "preamp" plug in and it's totally the ****iest thing, almost unbelievable how ugly it sounds. It just sounds like digital peaking.
Anyway, right, something fuzzy! Analog sounding is kind of a rediculous request as I've found in the world of plug-ins since nothing really ever sounds analog like they say it does. So if you know of something that sounds like it's doing a good job at paying respect to the world of analog distortion without making a fool of itself, let me know!
I've considered Trash by Izotope, but I'm looking for somthing that doesn't devour CPU like my Ozone does, even though I'm sure it sounds good!

Sans amp is good.
Cosmonaut is good.
Ampitube.

There are quite a few to choose from.

SimulAnalog Guitar Suite

It's freeware but VERY good stuff!

Put it on an aux/effx send.

Twist/mouse some knobs!

Also, a PSA-1 is the PFHSSHHITT!

Quick note: He's on Digital Performer, not Pro Tools. He needs AU.

I think Trash is your best bet. It needn't be the CPU hog Ozone can be. You can toggle on and off modules within it (of course, you can do that with Ozone too). Most of the time, you probably won't want all the doubling and filtering and other stuff that'll thin out your mix.

Anyway, Trash is pretty flexible and doesn't cost much.

Also, if you take the time to learn PreAmp-1, you'll find it can generate some cool distortions of its own. Just get past the presets. I recently used it on a hip hop-style track, and everyone who heard it said, "that's the right sound."

Lastly, Audio Damage has a free fuzz box plug you could try. Check their site.

Sorry for the double post!

Also, I didn't read enough into the O.P.'s question to realize that he was on a Mac.

Duh!!

Disregard my posts.

Delete me!

Off topic:
- How about a RTAS to VST thingy/wrapper/translator??

A BIG second on Trash. There's a lot in there that most haven't explored (including me)

tell me if there is one single plugin which sounds cooler and has more features...

(e.g. ms features in a distortion plugin. morphing live between different settings...)
(i am not working for them, just love this plugin)

+ 1 for the Ohm Force suggestion.
Another favourite is Trash,
but I prefer to reamp through pedals..

i may demo that Ohmforce..that looks awesome. I was told about the Camelcrusher (it's free) on here. I think it may be available in AU also. Anyway, it is great on it's own bus. I just send a lot of elements (or all to a degree) into it to get the mix really energized.

For bass, I have been doing this trick lately..I plug y bass into my sansamp DI. I have the active out going into one pre and then I have the parallel out go into my big muff pedal. Then that goes into a pre. I can get a nice hardware distortion with the muff and blend it back into the clean sound..best of both worlds.

Thanks guys! Was using fuzz plus, but the ohmicide sounds pretty cool. Also would use gearbox from time to time, but seems to have too many phase issues for parallel. Anyone try any of the airwindows distorto plugs? The demo of the bass sansamp sounds really good.

Bear in mind that due to a lot of begging and pleading for a killer Mac AU free distortion plug, I made my Density and Drive plugs free.

So here

http://www.airwindows.com/f/Density.dmg

http://www.airwindows.com/f/Drive.dmg

Oh, and my early vari-mu Pressure can have quite a distorted quality on some sounds...

http://www.airwindows.com/f/Pressure.dmg

Should be able to get some good sounds outta these- they're not the most wildly feature-laden things in the world but the basic tone is good

If you think these are too wonderfully awesome you can always go buy some of my NOT-free plugs too but I make a point of putting a lot of free stuff out there, to support the struggling artist. I figure maybe someday they'll come back and support me back, know what I mean?
