I hate doing one of these "what should I get next" threads.

So I have a modest setup that is a little bit over "low end" but below "high end," so having no "medium end" forums I decided to put this here.

I'm looking to do a purchase of about $800. I'm listing below what I currently have. The main things I'm thinking of getting are either some new mics, namely either an SM7 and something else or a pair of josephson c42's, or a new preamp for my API lunchbox (Probably a Great River).

I actually have a decent selection of mics so since I only have two decent pres I'd think that would be the way to go.

I do a TON of metal and hardcore.

Also, while some outboard EQ or Compression would be nice I don't think I'd really want that over another UAD-1. I don't know if I would even benefit from not having some great A/D D/A.

yep...a good pair of SDC mics. Man, that's one thing that we can always use and always use a better pair of. Until I get that pair of schoeps someday with all the caps, I'm still upgrading.....

I believe I saw a week or so ago, a pair of KM184's that went for something like $425 ea. So, not to talk you out of the Joe's, but there are other options in that price range as well. All the usual suspects:

AKG 451 EB or other vintage pair with CK1
Josephson 42 pair
Neumann KM184 (if you can find a deal used, otherwise too expensive)
Shure SM81 pair
AT4051 pair

I also am looking at a new pair. I'm very curious about the Chameleon Labs tube pair as well as the Beyer 903 (is that the right number?).

Later,

m

Flip a coin.

Heads - Josephson's

Tails - More 312's.

Good luck,

I see you already have some 57s although you can never have to many. I'm not sure which came first, the 57 or sliced bread. They can do everything but drive nails. For that you need an EV.

I think a GR 500 pre for the lunchbox or maybe the P-1 from A Designs. I picked those two because I want yoou to report back how you like them so I'll know which way to go.

$800ish budget?

A TON of metal and hardcore??

Pair of KSM141's

or

Used pair of KSM32's

or

More utility mic's? (4x of ???)

or

500 series pre?

or

dDrum Tiggers?

or

PSA-1?

or

More beer and cigarettes ?

How about a new/used guitar amp??

Lots of options for sure.

What do you feel is lacking in your productions?

Invest in mic's and hardware before the digital stuff IMO.

Laters,

I record a lot of heavy stuff and the r121 is a god send for guitar amps. Couple it with a condenser to blend in some highs and you're done.

Best mic for kick front head that I've ever tried.

So you guys think more mics before getting decent preamps? I've actually got a pair of Soundroom Oktava mc012's with omni/cardiod capsules that I pretty much have on permanent loan right now, so my SDCs aren't just the MXL603s.
