Desert Island Setup. 10 items. Writing -> Finished Song

What is your desert island setup based on gear and/or plugins you own or have used? Top ten.

Rules are as follows: you'll need to be able to write, track, mix and print a polished song. Instruments not included, unless theres a standout you can't live without

I'll start for good measure:

Mics:
AKG C414XLS - great for recording practically anything
Neumann KM184 - small diaphragm accompaniment
Sure SM7B (grouping this with a cloudlifter)
Interface - UA Apollo x8p (octo)
Plugins
UA Analog Tape Bundle
UA EMT Reverb Bundle
UA Analog Classics Pro Bundle
UA Eventide H910 Harmonizer
Izotope Ozone
DAW - Ableton (would say protools, but Ableton is so integral to the songwriting step of my workflow)
monitoring ADAM Audio A7X / Sub10 Matched 2.1 Monitor System

Channel Strip - LOOKING FOR RECOMMENDATIONS BELOW $2k. Mostly Rap and Soul. Or an SSL SiX instead of a rackmount strip?

I know I listed 11 - I had forgotten monitoring, and I'm late for an appointment. So let's make it 11.

Well, I'd basically be listing the core of my current setup. Don't have too many luxuries here and haven't owned much else.

Mics:
Shure SM7B - nice dynamic that can be used from everything from vocals to drums and amps and does well in untreated spaces
Beyerdynamic M260dx stereo pair - soft smooth natural sound - great on amps but could do well on vocals, drums, and acoustic instruments. Hypercardioid and does well in untreated spaces
Beyerdynamic MC930 stereo pair - smooth, creamy, detailed - great on acoustic instruments or drums, and I've been itching to try it on vocals after hearing the off-axis response of vox on a singer-songwriter track. Comes with a foam windscreen so maybe they realize this? SDC so does better in untreated spaces than an LDC (see a theme here?)
SM57 - just because it's nice to have an extra mic and one that you can fit in tight spaces and take high SPL (SM7B is a bit clunky for certain applications)

Interface: MOTU828es (2pres)
Preamps: Daking MPIV (4pres)
Compressor: Daking FET III stereo comp - versatile compressor for tracking, drumbus, or mixbus for some analog processing
DAW: Logic Pro X (I'd use all stock plugs for this scenario)
Monitors: KRK VXT4 - pleasant non-fatiguing monitors that work well in small spaces

6 channels and 6 mics lets me track a full kit
1) kick - SM7B
2) snare - SM57
3) OH L M260dx or MC930
4) OH R M260dx or MC930
5) Room M260dx or MC930
6) FOK, hi-hat, trash mic M260dx or MC930

and then add overdubs as needed with a few different flavors of mics. Mics were chosen for being useful in a wide variety of contexts, especially when rooms aren't treated, as well as giving several basic flavors (dynamic, ribbon, condenser). Transformer pres and analog compression give me some OTB mojo on the front and back-end, Logic Pro X can handle pretty much everything else I need for the most part.

I like this exercise, because it makes me realize I can get a ton done with what I already have, as opposed to most threads on GS which make me focus more on what I DON'T have yet.

Can't wait to read everyone else's streamlined/desert island choices.

Bundles are totally cheating. This bundle alone has eleven plugins in it. What if I choose the Slate Everything bundle or the Waves Platinum?

I suppose it's fair to call a pair of speakers is "one" item - but does that mean I can I call a 'matched pair' of mics one item? jkthtrt

Haha I didn't even catch that.

I guess that means I have two more slots since I listed two "stereo pairs" and counted them as four separate items.

Joeq, you gonna play?

This is the core of my current setup:

Mic:
Neumann U67 Reissue (plus an SM7B for scratch vocals)

Pre-amp:

Chandler Ltd. REDD.47

Compressors:
Universal 1176LN Reissue (last big thing I bought before the Big Lockdown; usually used in conjunction with my Warm Audio WA-2A, which eventually will be replaced with the real thing.)

Signal Processor:
Eventide H9000

DI Box:
Radial J-48

Guitar Amp Modeler:
Strymon Iridium (DIed guitars through the H9000 and then into the Iridium sound incredibly 3D and magical).

Interface:
RME Fireface UFX+ Thunderbolt

Effects Plugins:
Eventide Anthology Collection
Izotope Ozone and RX

DAW:
Cakewalk Sonar Platinum (simply because I’ve used Sonar since about 2000, and know it quite well.)

Monitoring Speakers:
Neumann KH420

or else you have to lose two slots, depending on the 'rules'.

Maybe this will turn out to be like those fairy tales where you get your wish but there's a catch. Like there's no electricity on the desert Island!

I suppose I have to now!

my "cheats" are as follows:

two speakers = one 'pair'
included plugs that come with the DAW don't count against the total
included plugs that come with the UAD interface don't count against the total
multi-channel preamp = whatever fits into one "box"

1. AKG 414
2. AKG 414
3. RE-20
4. Senn 441
5. Preamp: DW Fearn VT-24 four-channel preamp
6. Interface: Apollo 8xp
7. DAW: Pro Tools
8. Monitors: Genelecs or Barefoots
9. Plugin: UAD Ocean Way
10. Plugin: Trackspacer

My thinking is based largely on being able to cover the drums which I think I can do with those four mics. And they provide enough versatility to cover most anything else.

pain: Hurts to not have a ribbon mic. Hurts to not have a hardware compressor. There are definitely some plugs I will greatly miss.

Yikes, I just realized it is going to be tough to overdub without some headphones! I might have to give up something - or maybe cheat and call two 414's a "pair".

Oh that's right... we get 11 items - I guess I will add some headphones and I'll be good to go.

Or maybe I could put the speakers on either side of my head and wire them out of phase while I am playing the drums...

1. SSl 6056 Console
2. Studer A800
3,4. u47 pair
5. RE-20
6,7 AKG 414
8. Lexicon 480
9. Lexicon PCM 42
10. NS-10

Since you added one...

11. LA2A

Got enough to comfortably track a 4 piece kit, plus mic guitar amps and bass amps. I'd end up printing FX, but with a verb and delay/fx box I should be good. Screw editing and computers, if I'm stuck on an island, I wanna enjoy myself.

Yes, if he's allowing 11 I'm going to take 11 lol.

Also, nice job with the console. That gets you a whole lot for 1 slot.

Sort of on a dare, I did this with:

• (1) Sennheiser 421U
• (1) API 512C
• (1) dbx 560a
• PT TDM (192)
• Stock PT EQ
• Stock PT Delay
• Stock PT Comp
• Valhalla Room
• Massey L2007
• Bryston Amp
• KRK 6000's
• Headphones

Since OP considers a channel strip, monitors + amp, and plug-in bundles to all be One Thing, I think I'm probably more minimal. And I did do one cheat: snuck into a practice room at Valley College with my Apogee One and my laptop to record the upright piano.

Kind of new to the forum and hadn't heard of trackspacer. My work doesn't give me much free time and I've been looking for some secret weapons when it comes to mixing. Seems like that's a winner, thanks for the reply!

I only got it about six months ago but now I use it quite a lot. In big mixes and small, very handy tool.

There is a whole range of newer things that people are starting to call "smart" plugins. About the only thing they have in common is that they don't emulate a hardware unit from the 70's. In fact, they do things that would be unlikely or even impossible in analog. Check out some of SoundRadix stuff. Soothe, IMO is another one in that category.

Why are bundles cheating? Pro Tools or Cubase are bundles. So I’m including a bundle.

1. Event Opal monitors
2. MixCube monitors
3. ATH M40X headphones
4. Aston Starlight mic
5. Aston Starlight mic
6. Senn 602 mic
7. Cubase 10.5
8. Slate Everything Bundle
9. Steinberg 824 interface
10.Focusrite ISA 428mkII preamps
11.Mojave M-1000 mic

I thought of leaving the M-1000 off and including a dynamic snare/everything mic like an 835 or a 57. The Aston Starlights are amazing all-purpose mics that seem to work on everything, but for piano bottom and any voice not flattered by a Starlight I left the M-1000 in and left out the “snare” mic.
I’ve got to have the two sets of monitors to mix and the headphones to overdub, so I chose more monitoring than others did.

When I was in Nashville I had made plans with my song writing hero to put together a studio so I bought a ton of stuff. The studio never materialized and then the company I work for forced me to relocate.

Last year I got permission to relocate and sold about 90% of my studio and instrument regimen so I am down to bear bones.

I am moving to Logic Pro X from Pro Tools and I am on a Power Mac soon to be replaced by a new and spiffy iMac.

That said, here is my list:

01) GIK Room Treatment - bass traps and absorption panels.
02) Monitors - Focal Twin 6Be's.
03) Interface - Apollo Quad with a slew of Plugins (already own them so no need to pare them down).
04) GTQC Channel Strip.
05) UA 6176 Channel Strip.
06) Wunder CM7/GT (modded).
07) Neumann KM54a.
08) Neumann U87ai.
09) Neumann KM84 (2).
10) Royer 121 (2).
11) EV RE20.

Additional pieces:

01) Presonus Central Station.
02) Presonus HD6 Headphone Amp.
03) Real Tube 2 Channel Guitar Preamp.

I added the above three simply because that pretty much covers what I kept with me.

One regret is that I sold my CL1B and my 59 Strat. I won't go into detail but I had no other options based upon my situation so am grateful I had them to sell but man do I miss both of them.

Sorry if I stretched the rules a bit...

Me playing or singing, one thing at a time. Including one piece of the drum set at a time. Everything 421 > API > dbx > PT, except for the piano which was 421 > Apogee One > laptop.

OK.

Headphones
Monitors
Computer
Logic or Pro Tools
RE20
Pair of Octava 012s with all the large and small diaphragm heads I’ve collected. Cheating, pretending that’s one item
Gefell UM70S
La Chapell 583
Pair of RND 511 mic pres. OR if it has to be one item I guess I’ll need a stereo pre. Maybe stereo lachapell, don’t think I’ll get tired of that flavor. Or maybe a stereo API. OR QUAD API or maybe Daking.

It's a desert island. We can record outside and have no reflections at all.

What if you make your 11th item: "another ten-item list"?

Of course the Genie granting these lists could be a trickster himself.
He could go down the list, give you ten GIK panels and say "OK that's ten things - you have one item left!"

- a satellite phone so I can send my masterpieces to the world. Or buy more stock for the bar fridge!

Were you sent to a Desert Island as a result of a court ruling?
