Subminiature tubes & colors

How do you like these subminiature tubes that are in color units?

Was thinking of putting together a stereo color 500 setup with

LTL Pentode in fat mode
LTL Pentode in rich mode
HRK USSR

I’ll either get 2x HRK 500 parallel processors or a DIYRE Color Duo

How do these tubes compare to the normal sized ones?

Cheers

I haven't used the color units but as far as sub-mini compared to mini or other sized tubes, I hate to generalize (but here I go) by saying that sub minis are more consistent but that's my experience. Generally well-behaved and, because many of them are from an era when tube production was a bit more refined (not 'better' but more controlled), they often have a pretty even-handed tonal response. However, that's not to say they won't give color or are boring at all.

Again, that's a real generalization and there are many, many exceptions.

I personally think there's a lot of great sub-minis and it's a shame that flying leads are not user-friendly for these to be used in more products. People don't like having to send a product in for service just for a tube change and I think that may have something to do with the nice NOS stocks of sub-minis not being utilized more. However, DIY is a brilliant use for them.

Yeah it might be the lack of sockets that has kept these sub minis out of the audio / hifi world

From what I’ve read they’re way more sturdy and have less ringing and was used for military applications

Maybe some of the pro’s and designers could chime in?
