improve 2i2: upgrade interface, or use VST preamps?

Don't want to make the leap to RME or Apollo at this point due to cost. For a couple hundred I could either upgrade to somewhat better interface, or invest in VST preamps, such as the Arturia collection. Which option would offer the best return for my upgrade investment?
Thanks!

I upgrade from a 2i2 to an iD14 and have been really happy with it. 3 years now. The JFET DI is fantastic, not to mention the pre's sound like console pre's and have a lot of detail.

Interface is the better upgrade there.

The iD14 is exactly what I've got my eye on.

Good choice in this cost market. I also like the Steinberg interface with Neve transformers built in. Plus it has a great REVX reverb built in. Slight edge to Steinberg for ease of use. If you have Cubase, it's a breeze but works fine with the S1, Reaper, Pro Tools etc..

I use Ableton because I know it and can work fast (and am too old/lazy to learn something new), though there are probably better DAWs.
