Octavamod modified Rode NT1-A vs Nuemann TLM-103

I was looking at finding a good used u87 mic when I came across a Michael Joly "Octavamod" modified Rode NT1-A w/6 Micron diaphragm on Craigslist for $350.

I currently have a neumann tlm-103. Is this considered an upgrade? Worth buying it? I've read a lot of good things about the modified Rode. Should I just save up for the real deal u87?

Another mic I was looking at is the WA-87. I've read a lot of good reviews.

If you are looking for an 87, I very much doubt the joly mod nt1a (or the warm) is gonna get you there.
The only way to know if you like them better than your 103 is to compare.

I don't own the Joly mic, but I've used one quite a bit and compared to my vintage 87. It compares nicely, but isn't identical. I'd much prefer it over the 103. My opinion....worth $0.02.

If you look here on Gearslutz, I believe, you will find a survey that was done on a Michael Joly mic vs a U87 and his mic mod was chosen over 50% of the time to be a U87. So perhaps that would help you a bit in your decision making.

Incidentally, I've tried a Warm 87 and the Octavamod sounded far better to my ears. Actually, I'm surprised the Warm 87 is even called that, as I don't notice any of the characteristics, at least with my voice in my space, with that mic. A neighbor has one and I was super excited to try it and was just as disappointed afterwards.....amazingly so. But YMMV

I tried a wa-87 and was very disappointed. Too cheaply made for my taste. It had ground noise and I couldn't even use it!!
