Typically I'd never listen to an album with half the noise floor of Pet Sounds, somehow though this disc finds it's way to my ears once every month or two and then I usually have to listen to it a couple times. No better vocals exist. As for the noise floor, I guess that's what you get when you take an eight track, bounce to mono, and then bounce it back to a track of the 8 track.

Pet Sounds is still amazing. I'm suprised that anyone would be concerned over the technical 'weaknesses' of it. It's like saying Charlie Parker's records sucked.
Pet Sounds proves that great songwriting and great, innovative production are timeless.

You can have a great song recorded lousy and it's still a great song. You can have a lousy song recorded perfectly and it's still a lousy song.
Then there's the middle groundrollz

ps- having played some gigs with Mike Love, I can confirm that he had nothing to do with the innovative part of Pet Sounds. I was shocked to find out that he wrote the lyrics to 'Warmth of the Sun'. How did that come out a a self rightous jackass?

My experience was with Mike Love and Jan and Dean
doing some sort of survival /revival thing in the early 80's. I was clear to me that there was no joy in the music for Mike Love and that he was a bit stuck on him self (Jan and Dean were cool).
He had the 'just a gig' mentality. I think it was sponsered by Budweiser? or some corporate thing.
All about the Benjamins and the ladies. I surely saw no signs of a 'Wizard". That would be the Wilsons. Check out the outakes of Dennis's vocal musings - even he was a great singer. Carl had a solo album out in about '80'-81 that was killer. That man could sing!

I'm late in finding this thread, but I have to post on it. I thought I was alone in my admiration for Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys. Nice to be wrong sometimes.

I always thought Pet Sounds should have been a bigger album (at the time it came out, that is. I'm old). But I think I know what held it back -- that stupid petting zoo album cover.

Remember. Albums used to be huge compared to CDs. Good album covers still make a difference now, but it made an even bigger difference then. Do you really want to roll joints on a petting zoo? I don't think so.

Whereas, the cover of Sgt. Peppers was one of the greatest of all time (and an excellent background for doobie rolling). Imagine if they had dressed in military garb holding up pepper shakers. No don't, it's not worth it.

And "God Only Knows" is just one amazing song. Up until that album, it was all about sufing, cars and girls (which are fine subjects, just limiting) but they found their lyrical groove with Pet Sounds.

Anyway... it's nice to know my high opinion of Brian Wilson hasn't been based solely on nostalgic, ex-Calfornian ears.

Mike finagled himself onto many a writing credit out of simple refusal to sing certain lyrics... and then coming up with his own. Brian's such any easy going guy, he kinda got screwed...

I saw the Pet Sounds tour a year ago. Simply awesome; it is in NO WAY a shadow of the album. It was actually better, and the singing and instrumentation was simply suberb. Every last detail was paid attention to. Brian's voice was wonderful. It was th BEST concert I've ever been to, and I've seen thousands, including all of the heavyweights. -GT3

I agree. I saw it when it came through Austin at a very intimate venue called the BackYard. Excellent performance.

Brian came across a little spacey, something like an idiot savant. Think Rainman. But what the hell? That's Brian.

His backup band was amazing.

No, not "Smiley Smile" -- that strange, half-baked album that was officially released -- I mean "Smile", Brian Wilson's semi-unreleased masterpiece. (I say semi-unreleased because a lot of the tracks were released with one of the BB boxed sets and/or the Beach Boys' '70s albums. And there are a lot of bootlegs out there of the "Smile" sessions.)

"Good Vibrations" and "Heroes and Villians" were supposed to be on "Smile". Every song was recorded in short 15-second or so pieces like GV/H&V and spliced together to make a coherent whole, except that Brian couldn't finish it... It's amazing what he did accomplish, though. Some of the most sublime/beautiful/scary/mind-bending moments in pop, IMO.

Un-freaking-believable.
Yeah, I'm a HUMONGOUS BB's fan. I listened to Beach Boys for about three hours a day for about six years!

Smile is great. The one thing that's kind of cool about it not being finished is that you can peice together your own version of it.
I love that alternate version of Heroes and Villians from the Good Vibrations box set! All of the tracks off of Smile are great.

You knwo that song "Hooked On a Feeling" - i think that's the title- that starts with the "oog a chaka oog a chaka"? that dude must have had some Smile bootlegs

You know, Smiley Smile is actually cool though. It sounds underwhelming at first, but there are great moments. That damn "She's Goin Bald" ruined it for me for a long time. I love the version of "Wonderful" from Smiley Smile. You can hear the spit in Carl's mouth!!!

My favorite Beach Boys album right now is Wild Honey.

You know what else is great- that slow building backwards cymbal crash that starts "Never Learn Not To Love," the Beach Boys/Charles Manson song.

Is it to be found in the reverberant gap between the last aahhhh and the start of the outro chorus of The Beach Boys "good Vibrations"?
------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's the audible edit, not the reverb, that does it for me. For half a second, when the song goes mute, the response from the listener is like, "What the hell?" Like you've got one foot hanging over the edge of a cliff and you're not sure if you lost your balance. Then the chorus kicks in and all is right with the world.

It is a near death experience!

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH The 2 kickass parts of "Wouldn't it Be Nice" are the intro (the vocals start as a key change -- way cool), and the tympani/tom fill near the end of the song. Get's me air drumming every time.

For pure vocal heaven, I go "You Still Believe in Me." Mind blowing on the box set "Stack o Tracks" side.

"Hang onto Your Ego" (a.k.a, "I Know There's an Answer") is a great song.

A friend of mine described Pet Sounds once as peeking through a keyhole and seeing a huge orchestra jamming their asses off. Works for me.

Pet Sounds stereo remix should win a Nobel prize IMO. Mark Linett, man. Thanks, Mark!

But the stereo version of "You Still Believe In Me", is screwed up without the doubled vocals! I still listen to the mono, but hey, the stereo version is A LOT better than I expected.

I bought the cd. Sounded overly thin (sonically) to me for so much going on. Plus, I tried and tried . . . but I couldn't get the fact that he sounds like Rick Springfield out of my head.

I bought it when it first came out. I was having monitor troubles at the time and was looking for something to check them out (sonically) and didn't give it much time. Probably need to go back and give it a good listen.
