Signal appears hot leaving preamp but is cold on DAC input

Something I've never seen before. I have the following chain:

Royer 122V -> 122V power supply -> Portico 5024 Channel 3 (+48v) at about 42dB -> Avid IO. When I sing into the microphone, the Portico is sending a hot signal (the SP meter is near maxing). However, the input to IO is barely audible (1 bar out of 4). I can't really produce a hot signal to the IO and hear the microphone without drastically over-clipping it.

I have to say I am not sure what's happening here?

Effectively then you’re what’s called “one legged” - re only getting one pin of the balanced connection.

Which sounds thin and quiet as you’ve established

I had a similar issue with a Drawmer 1973 and thought it was busted for ages so it just sat there waiting to go to repair. Turns out it was just one half of the signal being shorted at the patch.
