Oh lord. As much as I dig The Fall on a good day my first job if I had to work with Mark E. Smith (rip) would be to piss off the territory making sure he knew I'm not afraid of him and will snap back at any signs of rudeness.

I knew someone who produced a Fall album.

When it was done Mark took all the mixes home on cassette. He spent an evening copying them to another cassette on his home stereo with hi-speed dubbing, to figure out the correct running order, then brought that cassette into the studio the next day.

The engineer said something along the lines of OK, right, great, I'll splice together the quarter-inch tapes and we can send them off to the mastering house.

No, said Mark. This IS the master.

And the album was pressed from his cassette!

Amazing band really. We supported them once and Mark E Smith pulled the plug on us somehow - we reckon cos we were going to blow them off the stage and he was getting jealous hahaha ( looking back on it this seems improbable ) . I lov ethe Fall but I have no time for rock stars being twats - I just wouldnt stand for that. I think its the public an dthe music presses fault for treating people like gods when everyone deserves respect. I always wonder if Lou Reed might have made some interesting music after thge velvet underground if everyone had hadnt kept telling him he was a genius (metal machine music excepted)
I would love to have seen Lou Reed andMark E Smith interview each other. That would have been fun.

I've had this exact same thing happen a handful of times. The band only has a rough mixed stem bounced to the grid and wants to get picky about the headphone mix. "No, that's not right. 'So in so' engineer said those are all the files".

On the other hand, now days most musicians I record run ProTools and record themselves at home and understand all that crap. They come in and jokingly give me crap about using the stock ProTools click sound...
