hybrid mixing and latency

I'm currently mixing OTB using a 24 channel console with inserts on each channel.

I'm intrigued by switching to something smaller, but I still want to use my outboard gear, particularly for compression. I can go out and back through the converters, but not without adding latency, which completely messes up the phase - for instance if I decide to add compression to a snare drum but not the overheads.

How do you all deal with this? I must be missing something obvious.

Most DAWs have a hardware insert plug that calculates latency and adjusts for it. There's also plugs like Latency Fixer. Or you can measure yourself and slide accordingly.

DAW's have latency compensation in their hardware insert plugins or somewhere else to fix that. Still, one sample isn't fine enough an adjustment to do parallel processing properly, but in your situation it's good enough.

In my older PT TDM system, in theory when leaving the snare out of the drum bus and sending it through an i/o to compress it, Delay Compensation will line everything up. In practice it's close but not perfect. So I'll run the snare and the stereo drum bus out and back through i/o's to keep everything even-steven. But even then, not every channel's conversion in my 192's has the same amount of latency; I have a couple channels that are different from the rest. Arg!

Thanks everyone. Exactly what I needed.
