Wider Stereo Image using 2-bus compressor

I read that using my A-Designs HM2 "Nail" compressor on the stereo bus in dual mono can "make the mix sound wider, as though it extends beyond the left/right boundaries of the speakers."

How exactly is that done without messing with the stereo image in a negative way?

If I read this right. I think it is referring to the fact the the Left and Right sides are compressing independently from each other. SO when lets say the Right side compresses a floor tom and sucks the mix back it makes it lean a bit which could make the appearance of a wider image.
