Is it just my TLM49, or are your guys experiencing the same thing – This mic requires about twice as much gain as most other mics in my locker. I consistently have to hit this thing with unbelievably high gain before it delivers a decent level. I’m wondering if they are all this way, or maybe mine has some problems? Tried with several good preamps, and always get the same result.Obviously the high gain brings the noise floor up above what most of my other mics produce at the same output level.
Yea, had the same thing with a U87 at a studio. Used untill there was some down time and then sent it away for repairs. Something had to be replaced, can't remember what it was - Haven't worked for that studio since or talked to the owner so I don't know what the final result was.
My advice is have someone reliable (I can't stress that enough) take a look at it.
I'm using a Pacifica with that mic, and have had no issues with running the gain "abnormally" high, compared to other mics (Gefell M930 in particular)...my RE20 does need the extra juice, but that's a horse of a different color
Focusrite ISA428, JoeMeek TwinQ, UA 2610, and an Avalon 737.
Using short cable runs direct to the pre. Tried several different impedence
settings on the pres that can do that. Tried Mogami and Zaola cables.
I think I'll have the mic looked at.
