HD3 192k. One week on.

Hi Guys,

Had my HD3 & 192k box for a week.
Heres my thoughts, keep in mind I went from 882/1622 A/D to the 192.

Already recorded mixes sounded better, probably from the 192.
Newly recorded tracks sound more open than the 882/1622 again probably the 192 box.
Ampfarm only uses 50% of a chip which is cool and about time.
9 chips per card is way cool, on a 44.1 session which was around 2 and a bit cards on a Mix3 almost fitted on one HD card just over.

Okay did drums tonight at 44.1, 96k and 192k
Dithered them all down to 44.1 with no EQ at all.
You can easily tell the difference
44.1 sounded ok until you played the 96k which sound more open and bigger. The 192 sounded more 3D and a lot clearer but I felt the tracks were too open and I would have to compress them a lot. Funny huh.
If I record in 96k goodbye all the extra chips and them some. Plus extra Hard drive space. So I will probably stay 44.1 for a while, maybe just do some more acoustic CD's at 96k. I might do a demo or two and see who it goes as it does sound better.

So I am happy I needed to upgrade the convertors from the 882/1622. The extra chips on the card are cool too.
If I had a AD8000 and wanted to stay 44.1 I do not know if I would jump as much. I would have to hear the diffs in the convertors first, or I can get extra chips with a new mixcard.

Wiggy and Kev hopefully will come down later this week and let you here what there ears have to say.

I might see if I can cutdown the minute or so stereo wav files to say 10seconds at 44.1 and post some on my website in a few days.

Looking forward to it.

The dead line is here and I'm still swiniging likea gate in the wind!

Last night I was on the phone to a friend and I had almost decided to let things pass for now. Not to say that HD is out, it is just that I think there is change in the wind with Macs and I think there is merrit on waiting as the dust settles. This is the worst round of u/G in the lifetime of Digi. Very soon a new Mac will be OSX only and you woun't be able to run PT !! Even now if you remove OSX dual boot and use 9,2 , you can forget Apple Care.

Anyway I'll change my mind in an hour or so .....

Hey Kev,
Told Wiggy Friday day was free if you guys want to come down, work out what you want to do test play with it. Maybe A/B some snares, amps etc though your ADAT bridge and 192k bridge if you want to brings some stuff. Give me a call 9381 2636,

I will try to get the wavs up latter tonight. Maybe only 10 secs of drums at 44,96 and 192 wav to keep size down. for those who are interested.
It was not the most scientific test just the same drummer playing with backing doing 1 minute worth of a end of a song 3 times, so the rolls vary a little. But all takes was with the pres and fader levels the same and no plugins at all, all straight after each other.

I will try to find a bar of beats and the roll which are the same so it can be a quick A/B.

Dave (and other 96K users),

I've used the 96K about 4 times. Neato. Problem is, I do mostly hip-hop & r&B... The 96K resolution of a 16 bit (if that) drum machine doesn't really do much for me. I have to admit, it's pretty damn cool for the vocals (which has been the one thing I've really wanted more from).
If I was doing more live instrumentation, I'd jump on the HD system like a pogo stick, but for mostly drum machines & vocals, what are your opinions on the topic?
(note: my current PT rig is a Mix, Plus, Plus, Plus, Plus, Plus, Plus, Plus, Plus, Plus, Vintage, Vintage, Vintage, Vintage) Pretty much Slammed.... plus, I love that spailtlizer plug in

Thanks in Advance,
E-cue

I am 99% acoustic so therefore keen on 96k

But I'm waiting for:

Plug in catch up
Mac OSX
G5 to come out
Clarity on dual prossesor issues
World class midi
A less insane hard drive count per session and / or an economic and fast back up

In the middle of a year earmarked for a high volume of spec work I can't justify the spend. I have the Mix + Max out (Apogees, Cranesong Hedd, Fatso + world class outboard) that will just have to 'do' for the time being..

Honestly, one of the most intruging new functions is the doubled amount of nodes. I've got processing for days, but when I work on 'pop' music, I find myself running out of the 256 nodes with my "vintage" rig...

Not true. I took OSX off my G4 as soon as I got it. Applecare knows that because I told them (I never suspected they would care - and they didn't). They've been very helpful.

Hey Jules, Thanks for the invite. I've been meaning to log on but I've been busy mixing and payin bills

E-cue , Man where can I get one of the spatializer plugs???? I know I'd have to buy a vintage farm to work it but who cares. I have the spatializer Retro, and would love to have it in ptools instead. Also, Im interested in how you get ptools to work for hip hop and RnB since thats my main genre these days.

I'm thinking of investing in some outboard and getting it right before it touches the box, then summing it externally

it may be true. jobs declared os9.x DEAD. the current crop of G4's will run os9.x but i wouldnt be suprised that the new G5's will not be running it.

im also kind asuprised on the slow rollout of OSX compatible music apps.

Yep, as I said.

I was ... and am still happy with OS 8.6. All my machines bar the G4 have 8.6 .... but guess what happened when I tried to load 8.6 into the G4/400.

One day the Macs will be OSX only and will Alishad be ready for it ??

Can't wait for the new Macs as I think a second hand G4/933 could be just the right Mac to move my Tools into from the 9600. I hope it will serve me as long as the 9600 has. Even then, the 9600 will probably get a 001 and do another year of service.

Ok guys, made some space, put up the wav files around 2meg each on the web. As I said, these are raw and were really only for my own interest.
hmm 96k might be an option but that means trading the 882 for a 96k box at least....??..??

I would of liked to do one with the 882 as well, although it was late and he was doing me a fav so I thought I would not push it.
I will leave these up for a couple of weeks, then put my Mp3's back up, should really update them, some are still from my VST days(3 years ago).

Hd test drum files

Sorry they are big wav files really did not want to Mp3 them, I already dithered them to 44.1k/16bit from 44/24,96/24 and 192/24bit files.
