larger board preamp

I'm curious on the preamp quality on these boards:
- mackie 8-bus (same xdr pre as vlz?)
- yamaha mc or ga 24/12
- mackie onyx
- tascam M3500/3700
- soundcraft studio/spirit/delta

I'm currently using a small yamaha mg16/4 and I mix in the DAW. What I need is more pres and routing flexibility. I'm considering buying a 2nd hand bigger board like the ones I mentioned above. Anybody had much experience with the pre on these boards comparing to others? Any major short-comings on any of these boards?

Not sure on the others but the Mackie 8 buss pres are not the same as the VLZ.
I mix on a 24/8 and every once in a while I use the pres and they're passable as long as you don't use them on featured instruments. I've heard that the onyx pres are muc much better but consider the cost. You can get an 8 buss board for really cheap so it depends what you need the pres for. The Soundcraft boards are going to have better eqs. Probably best to look there.

When you said 8-bus pre is not the same as VLZ, is it for better or worse? At this low end I'd think what I want is less noisy and that's it.

I'm planning to track it through as a front end of my DAW and for monitoring/routing. And it will not be the main pre.

Its not as good as the VLZ although its probably fine if its not your main pre. Look at used Soundcraft Ghosts or Sountracs Topaz boards or Allen & Heath GL3300 or?????. Again I have a Mackie and I'm fine with it but if I had to do it all ove again I'd probably buy a ghost. Have you checked out the Toft ATB?

Yeah I had some suggestion on Topaz but where can I find one...? Also I'm in Canada and it seems it's more available in UK/Europe than in the States/Canada.

The Toft is way out of my budget. For ghost it's cool but since I'm not mixing OTB the nice EQ and what not would be wasted. All I need is better/less noisy pre (than my Yamaha MG), more channels and more routing.

Thanks for the info. It's not ideal but I have to look at SR24 instead of the 8-bus or Tascam as it's more available here in Canada (2nd hand boards).

I've only had experience with the Onyx and Tascam pre's you mentioned. The Onyx's are better.

Go at least the 8 buss. Don't ger the SR24. IMO
