mixer group routing

Hey everybody,

Do most lower end consoles automatically route the groups to the stereo bus by default, or does this require patching?

I picked up a big mixer, a yamaha rm800, recently to route synths/set monitor mixes/twiddle knobs on and I am a bit confused about its routing

My understanding was that I would use the assign switches on the inputs to create mix groups, so i could set the relative levels/pan using the channel fader/pot and then set the overall group output on the stereo bus using the group faders.

This appears not to be the case. I checked a block diagram which seemed to confirm this, that the only way to put a signal on to the stereo bus is assigning an input channel directly, or assigning an aux return. So as a workaround, I sent the group outs to the aux returns and assigned these to the stereo bus.

I guess this makes sense, but it does seem a little inconvenient to have to patch the groups to the aux returns even when i dont need any processing in between.

Also, since I can assign the aux returns to any group, i could assign a group back to itself, which seems like it would cause some serious weirdness. any idea what would happen if I did this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Lives for gear

I'll be danged if I can find the sub group paths to the ST bus. (Assuming pilot error here... :>)
How about the subs default to the ST bus, and sub'd channels remain unassigned to the ST bus?

That is what I thought as well, but I haven't been able to get it to work that way.
I'm worried it may be broken

Has anybody ever used a board where groups had to be sent to the stereo bus via the aux returns like this?
