Custom-Built Companies For Analog Summing

Hey guys,

I'm currently looking for some companies that build summing mixers, preferably with transformers. I'm aware of the popular summing mixers out there, but was wondering if you guys knew of any companies that do custom-built ones?

I'm looking at VintageMaker at the moment, but that's really all I'm seeing right now. Any input is appreciated!

Talk to Chris over at HendyAmps (Hendyamps). He's done some great summing amps for a few of my friends, his Analog Stage is really cool. He's more than willing to design something custom, everything he does is top notch!

Did this ever get finished or released? I keep hearing about it, but I've never seen one.

And it looks incredible to! Wish I didn't have a few more pressing purchases in the queue ahead of one.

I normally don´t write much in forums, since this is really time consuming, but this time I just needed to say some words. :-) We often get inquiries for custom summing mixers. The thing is, if you want the same uncompromising quality our Sonic Summarizer PRO offers, you need to add modules from the same vintage analog desks, the amp and vca cards come from. We do offer 1ru and 5ru racks for danner cassette modules, but when I look at the wish list of our clients inquiries, I always recommend to either buy a mixing desk or stay with the SSP "as it is".

Add 2x VT19-5U racks with 16x stereo Neumann Faders, PSU, all Tuchelbridges, connectors, worktime, etc. and you will easily spend 4k to 5k € extra. You will still not have any aux sends, groups, etc. You must remember, that a neumann desk is in no way inferior to a vintage Neve loaded with 1073 modules. Even if you pay only 150€ for a stereo fader and not 2100,00 DM as they were in the 1980´s, you will have "overhead costs" for all the parts and time needed to rack them.

Of cause we also build mixers from danner cassettes for our clients, but that usually starts at the 50k € range if you want a real desk with auxes, preamps, etc. and a small master section. It´s still cheap compared to some desks in the >100k € range you can buy today, when you look at what you get, but who has so much money today? :-)

Anyway, we offer the Sonic Summarizer in the standard and the PRO version. We can mod it to have mono inputs for channel 1-8 (or more channels in blocks of eight), we can exchange the Lawo summing with a Neumann summing amp and so on. If you use outboard equipment, it makes sense to add a custom patchbay which is half normalized from the 32 DA outputs to the 32 summing inputs and also has all the outboards I/O´s on it. Together with the mono mod, you can add eq or compression to mono signals such as kicks, vocals, etc. Thanks to the transformer balanced inserts of the PRO version you can also add stereo eq or limiter outboard to "premaster" your mixbus with analog gear. If you use Neumann, Lawo, etc. eq´s and comps, you stay in the same quality range and your vintage german broadcast setup can grow step by step.

The VT-Trakker was an idea of how you can build a small, but uncompromising high quality front- and backend solution which works with your DAW, the Summarizer PRO and your studio setup. Sadly only a few persons understood what that is. :-) The whole vintage german broadcast stuff from the later (late 1970´s to the end of the analog era) period is made of danner cassettes or eurocards and you can re-build anything from just a rack with i.e. a channel strip to a full mixer.

I hope this brings some light in the dark.
