With FX it's definitely harder to hear as some phase shift is often part of an effect. As long as it doesn't obviously ruin your sound, it can be hard to tell. With parallel compression it's a different story. For starters you can check your auxes with a tone and a VU meter to see if they add level, when they don't you know there's a problem.
