How do make guitar pads like in Vertigo?

I've been trying to figure out how to make the guitar part in the begining of Vertigo by U2, its just under the main riff and sounds like a UFO swirling.
I have a lot of trouble filling the space with these kinds of sounds, I'm trying to learn how to create these guitar ambience. Any help would be much appreicated.

try feedin a delayed signal (when the feedback is really high eg 99 percent and delay is really short so you get a metallic sound, then send it to a plugin "tape delay" with the filter set quite high say 2k or higher, delay around 400-500ms and let that delay feedback til its on the edge of "out of control".

Maybe use an auto-pan afer the 2nd delay

That track has loads of edits and trickery, so maybe it wasn't gtr (?)

Jack Knife Lee got keyboard and programming credits on "...Atomic Bomb", so it's probably keyboards. There isn't that much going on in the song, apparently it was mixed "hands on", no automation, completely manual. If they (Steve Lillywhite and Carl Glanville) messed up a pass, they'd just "rewind and drop it in". Only 24 tracks for the whole song, mixed on Hanover Quay's Neve desk.

(From AT magazine interview with Carl Glanville, Issue 39.)
