Need advice: Ampex 354 vs 351 (R2R machines, not just preamps)

I'm looking for a tube based reel-to-reel to replace my JH110 and pair up nicely with two, coupled Ampex MX35 tube mixers.

I'd like something that sounds good and is relatively compact. I'm thinking the 354 fits this bill perfectly, but I've heard people say it doesn't sound quite as good as the 351's....but I think they're mostly talking about the preamps on the 351 (or not?) which I don't intend to use. I have plenty of fancy preamps, and the Ampex MX35/MX10 are probably similar to 351 mic pres (both are same era, use 12ax7's).

Anyhow, can anyone shed some light on the TONAL difference between the 351 and 354 when used in this fashion? Thanks!
