Track/Mix Classic Rock-Pick your gear-8 items max!!

Your'e got the talent, you've got the room.
Drums/amp/bass/guitar/singer
4 piece group

You can pick 3 microphones and 5 pieces of hardware (mic pres, compressors, eqs, etc...anything you want here) but your max budget is 30 grand on all items.

You have a Macbook Pro and your choice of software is included (In my case Logic pro)

That's 8 items to track, mix, a classic rock song

What would you choose?

Is this a game, a trick question, or do you need info on what to buy for a studio?

What's the deal with the 3 mics and 5 components limit?

How about something on you.

What's your level of recording experience?

Got any tracks you've worked on you could provide?

What are you really wanting to do here?

Dot aka Columbo

Geez...

I'm just curious how the pros would delegate funds to a slim desert island Rig
(quasi mobile in my case)

Here is my list and I'm gonna whittle it down as I consider this

Focal Solo6 Be
AEA N22
Beyerdynamic DT 1770 Pro
API 500VPR
Shadow Hills Industries Mono Gama x2
AMS Neve 1073LBEQ
Apollo 8 Thunderbolt 2 Audio Interface Quad
2 x Crane Song Falcon =
SM 57
Shure SM7B
Empirical Labs EL9 Mike-E
SE Reflexion Filter Pro
Gator GR-4L

But I'll have to thin this out to get to the magic 8

Define Game?
Not a trick question
I'm always in search of info

What's the deal with the 3 mics and 5 components limit?

Curious how the pro's would thin out and choose strategic gear if they had to

How about something on you.

I'm nobody-second gunman on the grassy knoll

What's your level of recording experience?

Minimal
I've had a lil bit of high end gear: Trakkers, Stc 8, Avalon 737, Great River MP2NV, Drawmer 1969, Tube Tracker TL Audio, HEDD, Apogee Duet, UAD Twin, Sm57, AKG 414, Rode Classic II, Royer 122, CMS 50 monitors.

Got any tracks you've worked on you could provide?

No

What are you really wanting to do here?

Just having some fun and Learning

I was thinking of going all Burl (complete burl solution), but then I wonder if it's more strategic to spend monies on various gear for my project studio.

Q: What's the deal with the 3 mics and 5 components limit?

A: Curious how the pro's would thin out and choose strategic gear if they had to.

======================================

I don't know any pro who would limit a $30K gear budget for recording "classic rock" bands to 3 mics.

Not sure what's up with your "magic 8." That's just nonsense. Sorry

Seems other than a Mac and Logic, you're needing everything else to put together a studio.

Would that be a fair statement?

How about a question like: How would you spend $30K on gear to put together a studio to record classic rock?

Mics:
4 SM57s snare, amps
3 Sennheiser MD421s toms, amps, vocals
2 X 414 (pair) drum, OH, acoustic instruments, vocals
Shure SM7B vocals, amps
1 AKG D112 kick mic
Telefunken AK47 ..has a Neumann vintage vibe. Cuts through dense mixes better than a lot of similar mics.

Preamps:
API 3124 4 channels of punchy preamps, toms, amps, vocals. You can look into switching opamps later
A Designs Pacifica - 2 channel "Quad 8" preamp. Sits between Neve and API. OH's, kick, snare, amps, vox, acou gtrs
Sebatron vmp-2000 great tube preamp with a classic sound. OH, K, S, amps, vox...

Outboard:
A pair of EL8 Distressors with stereo image and Brit mod options.

Monitors:
APS Aeon active monitors. 30Hz-30kHz frequency response. Solid low mids.
Yamaha NS10s with a Bryston amp (both used)

multi AD:
Lynx Aurora 16

2 channel DA:
Lavry DA11

Headphones:
AKG K141s and K240s for the studio.
Audeze LCD-XC for monitoring and mixing, especially when just working with the computer and no monitors.

Headphone amp:
Rane HC 6S (for 6 pairs)

Cables:
Gotham Audio

This is all probably nearing $25Kish

$5K left for acoustic panels, racks, stands, etc..

That's my 2¢ on $30K for a modular studio system for recording rock bands.

Dot has definitely put you on the right track. I'd probably swap the Lavry DA for either an 1176 (hairball clone would be fine) or an outboard equalizer.

8 items is plenty for a great classic rock recording. Most studios back in the day had very limited gear options.

My top 8 for classic rock are these:
#1 some utility mics: MD421 x5

#2 a decent stereo pair : KM84 x2

#3 a great condenser : U67 or U87

#4 preamplification: CAPI VP26

#5 compression: an 1176

#6 equalization: API eq's

#7 recorder: any decent tape machine or converter will cut it

#8 monitors: any nice headphones will cut it
