The Kooks Drum Sound

Hi, I have a band in the studio at the moment who are after a drum sound like on The Kooks album. Any pointers, it sounds very distorted and compressed. Any idea how to do that with the cymbals sounding like a complete mess?

On the Kooks record, the cymbals DO sound like a complete mess.

This is apparently the new ultra-hip, girl-jean wearing, devil-may-care sound these days.
All the hip bands just CRUSH the room mics, distort the vocals, and call it a day. It has its place, but most of the time, it's a mess.

Good luck with the session...I would just experiment with the room mics, maybe a few "wild card" mics (i.e. wollensack, or other gritmasters), and some fast, hard comp.

Yeah, to be fair the cymbals are a bit of a mess. The drums don't sound very roomy though.

sounds like a trashcan. Mike Brauer mixed that he may chime in to let you in on a few secrets.

I like the production of it, for what is generally quite an ok-ish song.
