Looking for a budget room mic

Hi everyone! I am looking for a budget room mic to capture the raw tone of my mesa boogie mark III through my cabinet. Any suggestions?

Hard to beat a 57 for this application (you can pick one up on the bay for about $50).

Can't recommend a stereo pair of Cascade Fatheads enough. Plus, they come with a Blumlein bar if you buy the kit.

I would suggest an omni for a room mic.

I just did a drum video where we put out two EV 635a's out in the room. It was almost an afterthought. They ended up making the recording something special.

I think omnis are a good choice for room mics because they pick up 360 degrees.

If you are talking about a distant mic, something 3-6 feet back facing the amp, I would usually use a condenser.

figure 8 is my favorite .. you can direct the amount of "Room" by turning the microphone(s) ... or put it sideways and do some Mid-Side thing .. the two Fathead idea is awesome .. lots of fun ..

Thx everyone for the prompt answers! ok, I'll give u an example. My 1st clip was recorded using a cheap - creative - pc mic *10 euros" The thing is that I really dig the crunchy and raw tone of the amp so I am looking for a mic to capture the ambient tone of the amp in the room

Unfortunately I cannot find the fatheads here in Greece. In fact, I don't know if they are available in Europe

Oh, I misunderstood! Well, to be honest it's a bit difficult to find some mics to test... I guess it's either blind buy or ... no buy!!

Take a look at the new Miktek MK300, a budget multipattern LDC, might be ideal for your situation.

I have a Nady RSM ribbon mic that only cost about $75usd brand new on eBay that I really love on room applications. In fact I bought it just for the look for a photoshoot for a rockabilly band thinking I would just sell it locally when I was done with it. After test driving that mic, I found that it was really in the ballpark of my more expensive ribbon mics.

Just a suggestion. Perhaps in Greece you know of a recording studio? Then perhaps, you give them a visit and ask to chat. During the chat you ask them how they MIC guitar cabinets. Most engineers LOVE to talk so getting one to open up isn't that difficult. This may or may not work for you but better than buying a MIC with just reading ads and reviews.

Trying to be helpful,
Jim
