Opto mode sometimes works for me... depends on the singer/song.

Using one right now with my 22 47LE and Pacifica... Got it set on 3:1 /attack 5/release 4/ with about 7 reduction MAX... Sounds pretty good for controlling peaks (so I can crank the pacifica)... I wish I had an 1176 or LA2a though HAH

2:1 ratio is killer ('smooth' and 'fat')... with something behind it with a little more grab, or later in the mix...

I use it every single time. I am recording things on the more rockin side of the spectrum most of the time and I love it.

General purpose vocal setting, 6:1 with 6-7 on the attack and 3.5-4.5 on the release.
Add dist 2 for some extra grit. You cant go wrong with that setting.

My avocational experience:

I thought it was great on vocals for the couple of years I had it, and the UA 1176, too. I used the Distressor for a "smooth" sound (something like 4:1 6.5/3 attack, release respectively) very gentle and smooth. The 1176 was more aggressive and put an edge on vocals, maybe added some kind of brightness.

The Cranesong STC-8 is my only HW comp now, and I'm completely happy with that.
