Using Power Supply with Saffire Pro

When I purchased my Saffire Pro, the salesperson told me several times not to use the power supply because the unit is bus powered. However, when I turn on phantom power in the control panel, the unit turns off. I have a feeling it's not getting enough power from the computer (Imac) so I would like to try using the power supply with it to see if that makes it work. I'm sure I've heard people say that you can use the power supply with it but after being told by the salesperson not to, I'd hate to try it and end up blowing it up. Can anybody give me an answer to this. Thanks very much.
