Quality Surge Protectors

Do I need to give in and fork out some dough on a power conditioner? I don't have any issues with noisy power. I'm just using surge protectors right now. I know next to nothing when it comes to power talk.

I just DON'T want to take a surge! Can I buy something at Home Depot and feel really confident in it?

What's the ball park price range I should expect to spend in order to feel 'safe' from gear taking a surge?
