Well I haven't use the D45 but I've owned a D75 and the Stewart amp. My opinion is that the switching power supply of the Stewart is just not comparable to the Crown. In my opinion, the Crown is a better amp all around.

I had a D75 for a while, clued me in to how noisy my first 4 track was. Wish I still had it with the speakers I have now.

Crown makes good amps. Stewart? Not so much......

But a D45 has to be 35 years old, might need some TLC.

Obviously, a $400 amp is going to beat the pants of a $250 amp. My question is, how much of a difference will there be? I'll be using it to power a headphone distribution network for tracking.

John, I would still agree with you... if I hadn't used a Stewart power amp last year for a show that ran for several months. We used it to power stage monitors. Very well built amp with gobs of power and nice long pause on power up--I was really shocked how nice the amp was. Nary a problem with it. Not sure of the model, but know it's not the one OP is asking about. It changed my opinion of Stewart.
