Yeah, Obregon is close to Hermosillo. It's a 3 hour drive or so. I have friends there too. Where are you from?

And thanks for clearing the laughter thing. I used "jeje" on many posts, I guess nobody understood exactly what I meant hahaha.

Our dogs are the same way. Hey you should post that photo on the "Pet in the studio" thread.

Congratulations on making a decision. My take is almost any of the units at this level are quality and at some point it is just up to flavors so I have stopped stressing as much because I know that I will probably find a use for anything that I buy at this level.

Thanks for taking the time to do this, nice work..

Two days ago i did a shooutout with popular mics and pre's and i like to share the results with you guys! I am in the market for a new mic and pre for vox, guitar and bass and i have gathered the following mics and pre's to try out:

- avalon 737SP
- a-designs pacifica ( ithink the first one to set foot on dutch grounds!)
- ua LA-610
- ridge farm gas cooker

- Royer 121
- JZ-2
- JZ-4
- Rode nt-1000 (own)
- Shure sm 57 (own)

Since i am running a non-commerical bedroomstudio i have a little disclaimer: I think all samples are within the same reasonable loudness range and ofcourse mic placement and so on can't be perfect. I forgot to buy new stings for my acoustic and the di files you hear are from an SG. But it is to give you some impression of the characteristics and i think this is perfectly possible so.

I did not use any eq or compression etc. Only on the avalon i tried the +32khz band with two db on vox.

Ofcourse i like to thank Harold, from i4-muzique my local dealer, for letting me try out all these tools in my own studio and trusting me that i could take care of all his puppies!

I would also like to thank Peter Montessi of a-designs audio for his service and for hooking me up with Bo Medin (from golden age music) who delivered me the pacifica all from sweden, so i could also try that unit out. Oustanding and really fast service, thank you! thumbsup

I decided for myself to go with the 121 and the la-610 or the pacifica. I can't really decide which of those 2 pre's. i like the compressor of the la610 very much, but the pacifica has two pre's instead of one..... PLEASE HELP ME DECIDE!

Here are the sound files of the shooutout. If you want to hear others please tell me, because i have like 150 samples of all combination:
To be honest, i liked most all the samples, the non electric was nice and warm, the electric i could hear that upper mid annoying mid sound, the bass was way to open, the vocals was prefect as long as you were in the lower tone, when you pushed and went higher again i hear those upper mids that turn me off.......just being honest, i do not rememeber hearing your samples when i was searching.
Thanks so much for the link.
ps: also im listening on my G4 itunes to most of these samples, with Grado Labs Headphones

Thanks for the help!

What a great thread. I've been researching pres for a while now, and I'd heard so many great things about the Pacifica that I came to this shootout expecting it to blow me away. So I was really surprised that on the individual tracks I liked the LA-610 better almost every time. In fact, I was just about sold on it until I heard the mixes. I think you made a great choice. With just headphones through my PowerBook's headphone jack, the Pacifica mix just sounded more "holistic" maybe? More unified? I don't know the word for it. Then I ran the mixes through my Fireface 800, with headphones and through monitors, and the clarity of the Pacifica mix was even more apparent. I'm not willing to say the difference between the two mixes was night and day (they're both very nice pres) but to me, the Pacifica tracks really did work better together. I can only imagine that the difference would continue to be more pronounced as you add more tracks. Thanks again for taking the time to post your findings.

On both the mix and the individual tracks I like the LA-610 the best. I was expecting to like the Pacifica because I really liked what I heard from other posts. I have to say I'm really impressed with the LA-610, very cool must order one soon. Maybe I can barter my 3630 for eight of them...

just wanted to say thanks for the comparison.... .... and second all the thanks for the time invested ....

i really enjoyed the LA-610 sample as well.... as a few slutz have mentioned here already....

I was messin about with it in particular as i was trying new ways of applying effects and such in an app im familiar with (Reaper) and one im getting aquainted with (Powertracks). My soundcard was down at the time....(DAL) .... and just enjoyed the LA-610 sample .....so i used it to just get a feel for what both Apps together could do....as this particular sample sounds similiar to what i record..... in feel and vibe...

just curious if you are interested in hearing it ??? ... i have NOT used it for anything other than sound experimentation BTW....just to make that clear... i cherish others work and do not head that route....

cheers

Hi Roger

it's nothing too out-there..... pretty simplistic..... but everything you hear is done with just the LA-610 sample..... NO mastering....etc..... just chorus....wah.... compression..... etc effects.

here's the sample..... ( following post)

cheers

very nice

The sample is from a song called "the clearing", we wrote it 2 years ago. That was my first real recording project too. I guess it is still somewhere in the mp3 upload section of the forum. The mixing ofcourse needed heavy improvements, but hey, it was my first project!

Hi Roger

cheers....

really liked the simplicity of acoustic guitar and enjoy tweaking sounds captured by it.... (play myself) .... and im guessin is why i took to the LA-610 recording.... the LA-610 really captured that particular guitar nicely...

... ill have a look out for "the clearing".... but u know.... even if u ask the greatest of the greats......on their 10,000th mix....they'll always say things could be improved here and there.... ... which just goes to add to the " nothing is ever truly finished" theory. heh

cheers Roger

p.s sry for the time between posts...
