Investing in a 5.1 setup

Hi, first time poster here.

I do music for visual media, and I would like to expand my setup from stereo to a 5.1 configuration. After asking a few friends and reading through posts on here, it seems like there are a variety of opinions on the best way to do this in my situation.

Current Setup
  • Alesis io2 interface w/ ASIO4ALL
  • 2x JBL LSR2328
  • Intel i5 3570K
  • 16 GB DDR3
  • 1x 128 GB SSD
  • 1x 1TB SSD
  • 2x 1TB HDD
  • Windows 7
  • Cubase 8 Pro

Candidates
Some of these don't have USB out, so I assume I would need to get a different mobo or a Firewire card. I have been told that it would be better to get a Thunderbolt card and just use an adapter, as it is more futureproof. The mobo I have found as an option is the GIGABYTE GA-Z97X-UD7. I have looked into soundcards, but haven't found anything that seems great.

I am not sure how to decide which of these options if any are appropriate. My criteria is:

Need
  • Enough line outputs for 5.1
  • 24bit/96k
  • Decent drivers, I hate ASIO4ALL
  • Budget up to $600
Want
  • Enough line outputs for 7.1
  • Multiple headphone outputs
  • Lots of inputs
  • Sample rates above 96k
  • MIDI in/out

Of the suggestions that I've been given so far, I am trying to take all of them with a grain of salt. I'm not sure if it comes down to preference, but it seems like a lot of these options meet all of my criteria. There are probably several other options that I'm not aware of, so I don't know how to narrow all of them down.

If anyone can help me nix any of these options or provide a better one, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks folks.
