Having been through a fair few amps over my time I am currently using a Fender Blues Junior II Tweed...why?

1)It's light, fits nicely in my car boot (trunk!)
2)It's got a great clean tone and works nicely with pedals
3)It's light and small!
4)It's pretty loud and breaks up nicely
5)It's small!

I should mention that it gets mic'd and goes to the PA and I get a monitor feed from a wedge or IEM's so total loudness doesn't matter at all!

Yes I am being lazy, but it is the perfect amp to throw in the back of the car for most small to medium gigs, it works nicely with my pedal board, I like the fact it has a FAT switch....I wish I had a FAT switch

Here are some pictures!

Enjoy!

Im still trying to figure out the differences between all types of Amps. Ie; fender, peavey, Marshall's etc. I understand there are differences in sounds but I've never really paid much attention. I've only ever had a peavey amp and recently a small line 6 to practice with

After much research and demo'ing I bought myself a line6 dt-25+pod hd500. Largely because I didn't know what kind of sound I wanted to get, and it gives a very good representation of the fender/Marshall/vox/Mesa sounds. In a year or so I'll probably be ready to sell it and buy something more dedicated to 'my sound', but now I have a much better idea what that is (it will be a fender or vox).

I've got 5 amps right now and I've had some others in the past.

Here's what I got:

-Vox AC4TVH, small, not too loud, crazy good dirty tone if matched to the right cab, I use mine with a bell and howell 1x12 cab made in the 50's, it was a home theater speaker but it sounds really good with that little vox head.

-Marshall MKII Bass from 1977, really toneful clean with huge lows, dirty crunch when pushed, dirtier than a superlead but with a twist of the eq it's easy to get that classic marshall crunch

-Marshall Jubilee from 1987, apparantly similar to a modded JCM800 but I never tried one myself, good for distorted tone, not a hard sounding amp, it's quiet for a 50w amp.

-Fender Supersonic, 3 channels, 2 clean (vibrolux and bassman) and a dirty channel. I use the bassman channel in my band, it has a nice mid push that cuts through the mix pretty well. It's a versatile studio amp, the vibrolux channel is really shimmery and the dirty channel can work pretty good for solos.

-Ampeg SVT from 1977, the classic bass amp, everybody who walks in love it.

All those tube amps need to be pushed to sound their best but it's especially true with the marshalls, I can get good tone at low volume with the fender more easily than with the marshalls.

Aren't marshalls known for their warmth and distortion? I've seen a lot of heavy rock and metal bands using Peavey though.

There are so many marshall models... and they all sound different.

A classic marshall tone is ACDC, that's the plexi crunch tone.

Marshalls aren't reputed for their clean tone but I really like the clean on my MKII, it's a really toneful clean sound.

Some Marshall are "warm" some other are "bright".
The most popular models are the Plexi and the jcm800, check on youtube if you want to hear the difference between the two, they're not the same amp at all.

I used to have a Vox AC30 but it was WAAAY to loud for 90% of what I needed it for

so I sold it and with the proceeds I bought:

Vox AC4
Blackstar HT1
Fender Blues Jr 3

I have to say I'm loving the low wattage life.

Lots of tonal variety, no ear bleeding but real tube breakup when I need it and the Blues Jr is still loud enough to play out. I can now get all of the amp sounds I want with real amps pushing air in my home studio without a lot of interruptions from the local police telling me to turn it down

not a lot of clean headroom but since I'm not trying to play cleans un mic'd in a sports stadium, who cares.

So jealous! I fell in love with that tone just from videos and ****, especially after I found out that was one of the amps John Frusciante used. If only they weren't so damn expensive. I almost went and bought one of the clones from cieratone or whatever its called.

anyway, my first and only tube amp is the Egnater Renegade. Nice little amp. I only have the 1x12' combo but thats still enough for me. 65 watts or 18 watts. I just find that I really have to turn both it and my single coil strat up to get some dirt. I really need to get some kinda fuzz/overdrive/distortion pedal to help that

Yeah it's a good amp. Live it doesn't sound that good imo but it records well. It just doesn't have much balls compared to my other amp when listening to the amp in the room but once "miced", it sounds good.

TAVD, You have a Nomad Hi-Gain head listed. Could you help me out with some information on it? My uncle has one in his garage that is missing the tubes and I'm wondering if it would be worth investing any time or money into making it work. I'll try and attach a picture of it. Thanks, Jollymon

They can sound pretty good with both channels jumped. I wouldn't invest too much but I'd imagine you can re-tube it and fix any minor issues for under $200.

This is a bit off the path for me, but what the hell. From back row top, L to R:

Horan 5 watt 6L6, 12”
Late 80’s Deluxe Reverb
Blues Jr
Epi cab with 12” Tone Tubby
’63 Vibrolux Reverb, 15”
‘96 Naylor Electroverb 38, 12”
Blues Jr
Horan 5 Watt 6L6, 8”

Here's a shot of Horan's superclean hand-wiring. They are my main studio amps. Two knobs; 100% tone. The Vibrolux came out of a prison where they had stuff for inmates' use. I had a steel player in a few months ago, and he almost fainted at it.

These few remain after thinning the herd from about 20, some of which I hadn't seen for years. A few Matchless (bought but rarely used), old Gibson LP amps, Silvertones, etc...

The Naylor is my main gigging amp, but sometimes the 2 Blues Jr's. They make an awesome little stack, much louder than you'd imagine.

From the recording session for "monster" by Mr. Pixie

The track still isn't finished mixing (6 mos. later!). I was using my Mooger-Collider with 6 or seven outputs.

I sold most of this stuff, but I'm still looking for a home for my beloved RG-300 head.

Right now I depend upon:

Vox AC4 (w/ ancient AT7 in preamp)
Fishman Loudbox Performer

Thanks. It really is a sweet one, and I was really lucky to bust it out of the Graybar Hotel. It's actually brought a bit of work to the studio, as I now keep it locked up here. No work release for that one
