gt_jumper, favor please:

Chain all your amps together. Crank them all up. Play metal for a long time while video taping your neighbors' reactions (think Cheech and Chong - Next Movie). Please post these reactions on youtube and provide a link in this thread for us fellow gearslutz participants to enjoy. That would be great.

This is my favorite amp of all time. A 1966 Vibrolux. It can get so many different tones.

I do wonder where in the hell some of you guys get all the money...

I would love just one new Marshall 410 half stack, like $3400, and an ENGL are you kidding me??

I mean seriously, how does one afford that much less being married?? You guys rob a bank or an armored car?

IS that sarcasm? I thought only the poppy and rap crap was making money.
Heavy music has been in a death roll for years, sad but true. I was lucky I grew up in an era that just had the best music ever created from cool soul to funk to all the major god bands. I saw Zep at their peak right after Presence and I never forgot that made me Pagey freak to this day. I saw the old ARMS tour with Page Beck and Clapton way, way back and man Beck just floored me.
These days what is there to listen to? Some artists are holding the fort but in general a whole lot of it sucks major space vacuum.

If you like the old vintage little amps that is a sweet thing.
$1000 for the Champ, $2000 for the twin. Look them up, better than something really old that needs a refit and rework.
I could dig on the twin but man that is some bucks.

I had a U45B I restored...used it on one recording. The cleans were pretty dirty on it for me...but it had a cool thing going on with it. Definately an underated recording amp...used some weird tubes though!

Just restored my first amp: Univox U45B

I don't really play as much as I'd like to but I have:

Sovtek MIG 50 - Previous owner added a master volume control which certainly helps a lot. I really love this amp. You can get some pretty thick, chunky tones out of this thing.

'65 Fender Deluxe Amp - This amp belonged to my dad. It needs work, though (new speaker, cap job). When it was in working order, it was great.

This is sarcasm. I'm English. Sorry about that. I am guessing that people with 6 cool amps + cabs in their living room aren't making their living from music, but enjoying the playing. As one producer said to me the other day "I don't want a vintage amp! I want to/have to use my amp every day!" That is no criticism of well off guys buying nice gear. All power to you. I often think it's easier to enjoy yourself and play what you want when you DON'T have to earn a living from it.

I am also exceedingly jealous of you having seen those guys in their heyday, especially LZ, although I'm not sure their peak was right after Presence...ru sure about that?? Still I am sure they were great. I'd love to have seen them in '72 or '73. However I was 4/5 years old then. Beck played Ronnie Scott's for a week recently and what I saw on TV was great. A unique player.

Beck live at Ronnie Scott's is my fav guitar DVD, also have it recorded from Paladia channel. Sad to say I never made a dime playing had my dreams and efforts but that portion of my life never panned out. I could not count the amount of money I have dropped on gear over the years. It is a major addiction, at least until the bottom fell out out of my budget. I love the guitar and playing since I was 17 now 55 this year. Too old to worry about it anymore, just dig playing and creating music. I taught myself to improvise and create things without having to really think much about it, just comes natural. A lot of bands and players in Austin used to love me to sit in and jam with them or help them spark some writing efforts. I could morph into anything and they just dug that ability. Much less the light show from my board in the darked out rehearsal room. Never got to try to be a rock star and never became a drunk or drug addict but I love the music and always will. Being able to play real spontaneous music is the best gift and experience of my life.
I have a fair amount of gear but actually if I had a room full of amps I would probably not play all of them. Despite I have several guitars I tend to pick up my tone fav kit I built and use which ever rig system is ringing my bell at the time.
I envy some of the bucks the guys drop here. My wife would probably beat me to death with a Strat if I ever thought about trying to buy even more expensive gear. She is cool and tolerates my gear addiction and let's me feed the beast from time to time and she digs my playing so that is pretty cool.
Beats my ex trying to steal all my gear in the divorce thing years back.

I do not do the recording thing as that is just another money pit for me. I used to do that some time back and now a days the gear is just out of this world, probably would have hundreds or thousands of hours of stuff no one including me will ever hear.

Love those amps man. I sort of spent most of my bucks over the years building and redoing pedal boards and guitars. I have 2 good rigs which bring the tone and had I more I doubt if I would give them much use.

Iv'e had a 1984 JCM800 Master Vol. 100w 2203 since new,and in 07 I got it totally rebuilt,by the guy who put a second switchable master vol. in 88,Frank @ FM Audio Adelaide, and it honestly sounds better than when it was brand NEW!!

A while ago I bought a Peavey JSX combo, thinking it would be handier with 3 channels, and being a combo, but,I use the volume on my guitar so much,I ended up hating the different channels.

It's nice amp[very loud]good tone, but now my Marshall is rebuilt,I don't seem to use it,and I have experimented with both together,I guess I just like the simplicity of the 2203,with 4 Celestion Greenback's 25w of course.
RK

Edit: I finally got to see Jeff Beck twice! Once in 07 I think, and again in 08,both with different bands, the first time was the same band as Ronnie Scotts, the second time, all new,but both times,he used a Marshall Super Lead,or it could have been a re-issue JTM45,but the amp cabinet looked too big for the 45,anyway it was mostly Marshall, with a Fender combo,as well.

Sounds as if you've enjoyed yourself over the years. You're dead right about having too many amps and not using them much. I find I use 3 or 4 of my amps a lot, a couple of others quite often and the rest (3 or 4) hardly ever. I should get rid of them really. You know how you get fixated about a certain amp.... I really NEED a SuproVibroChampoDeluxaverbMaster or else I'll never make great recordings???

I think people forget what great value amps are as opposed to guitars. Β£800 will get you a very nice amp, vintage if you like. I got my '64 Showman years ago for Β£350 and it still gives me the warm smile. Value for money!

Curious to know...what is the small amp miced with the sm7b?
Also, would you recommend one amp or combo that works great on a variety of styles of rock/pop music?
Clean to heavy, not metal.
Thx.

This has been my bass rig for small club gigs for the past few years

...but lose the bottom cabinet and it makes a fabulous jazz guitar amp! Clean, but not sterile or one-dimensional.

Best part is the whole rig can be carried by hand for surprisingly long distances. Those Flite Sound cabinets are freakishly lightweight.

It's a Marshall MS-2, 1 watt, tube
I have many mini amps, I use them to process various things
during mixing, vocals, snares or drum buss for the most part
but also synth and bass sometimes.

As for a versatile amp, eh, there are many really, I find Hughes&Kettner tube heads to be very versatile, Mesa Mark IV, for something "on budget" I'd probably go with one of the small-ish Blackstar, they sound good and they
are versatile. The low wattage ones can also give you some good drive
at a reasonable volume.

here's a vid of that specific session (vocal thru the mini Marshall/SM7),
I think the song is the one in my sig? That or another one from that album,
is gonna be on soundcloud if you wanna hear the final result
