Rolls headphone amp crackles

I have a Rolls HA43 that has been working relatively well for a couple of years but lately it's been crackling every time I move the slider. I'd go "ouch" whenever I adjust my headphone vol. It's annoying as hell and I'm not sure where the problems lays. I opened the sucker up and it looked like the soldering on the sliders have some yellowish gel-like coating. Other than that everything else looked normal. WTF. I've looked up and down the web but couldn't find answers. Or if I need to buy a new headphone amp? Any thoughts?

Sliders have the habit of getting noisy after a few years. Faster then a rotary control, because dust can get into a slider easier then in a rotary volume control. Also internal oxidation makes controls crackle.
No need to worry yet. Get a can of good quality contact cleaner from your electronics store, and squirt a bit inside the slider. Don't drench it. Move the slider up and down before the cleaner has evaporated.
Bit of a warning here. Some sliders don't move that easilly anymore after that, because you have also sprayed away the grease of the mechanism.
Better to take a slider apart, and only clean the carbon track with a cotton bud soaked in the cleaner, but you have to take things apart for that. That may not be possible with these sliders.
Good luck,
