Adding a humbucker to a P90 Strat?

Hey guys,

For the last couple of years I've been playing a Strat with two humbucker-sized P90s, using an HH faceplate. I'm using a three-position switch: the middle position uses both pickups to cancel hum, but it doesn't sound especially good.

Generally I'm happy with this setup: the cleans are fantastic, and medium-distortion is good. Unfortunately, the P90s are too noisy to play nicely with fuzz and heavy distortion, which is increasingly what I'm exploring.

I've been thinking about adding a third humbucker (in the middle position) that I can use with heavier distortion. I have a couple of spare pickups ... but I don't know much about the wiring or any potential pitfalls of doing this.... although I know my pots are 500k and the guitar body is routed for three humbuckers.

Is this likely to be a good idea, and is there anything I should be thinking about before embarking on this?

Just keep in mind that a middle humbucker doesn't sound that classic neck or bridge humbucker tones.
