sometimes I refer to things going "88" -meaning haywire- because when something is really wrong a lot of displays will light up all the LEDs creating an 8 at every position.
I teach an audio class in a community college and every semester I get a couple of flashing 12's. There should be a prerequisite- something like Introduction to VCR Programming- before you can sign up for Audio I. The real "12"s would flunk out and never make it to my class, saving us both a lot of trouble.
