I start with articulating my goals. I don't just "want a synthesizer", I'm not just "getting into modular" in some generic sense, nor do I care about trends or keeping up with anyone...

I have specific goals, and that list of goals grows as I learn more. I think of, and revisit and edit, these goals often. For example, my list of goals includes things I consider absolute requirements:

* vibe-y or otherwise characterful or vintage-y sounding analog Oscillators
* choice analog filters drawn from classic designs and other innovations
* Modulation, Modulation, Modulation, Modulation, tons of interesting Modulation


"Keeping your eye on the prize", or having clear goals and continually referring back to them, is, IMO, the single most important thing you can do.
