If you can DIY I can recommend the Seventh Circle Audio J99 which is a Jensen Twin Servo/John Hardy style pre. https://seventhcircleaudio.com/products/J99 They're ftted with a Lundhal LL1538XL input transformer (Lundhal's best mic transformer), a high nickel Cinemag output transformer and two 990 opamps. Quiet figure eight microphone for side channel use

...my space, but don't have a sensitive enough mic to capture the side without noise. Preamp is a Seventh Circle Audio J99, or T15. Budget is around $500. How do you feel about an Aston Spirit for this application? Or should I save up for a used 414?
