Roland Tr-8 update 1.5

New TR-8 firmware is available. Additional Function Supported frequencies during a USB connection were expanded to 44.1, 48, and 96 kHz. * To make use of 44.1 and 48 kHz, use the latest version of the driver (version 1.5). Functionality for triggering the SP-404SX or SP-404A was added.

sp404 users: Opinions?

So, I cannot speak about the OG SP-404. I've only used the SP-404sx & SP-404A (identical units, but different paint job). I guess if I know what it is you're looking for I could be of more help. Regarding the sound quality, it's slightly noisy (like your running your music through a phono preamp)...
