I was mixing a record at home one day and started thinking back to how we used to use the speakers on 1/2" machines, boomboxes, Auratones, and anything else that would give us that "small" perspective. So I went to ebay and searched for Auratone.. didn't find much. So I came to gearslutz and read a monitoring thread where someone mentioned the Behringer Behritone. I checked the price and ordered it without even thinking or reading 2 reviews... $100!! I figured, how bad could it be? I didn't even have to buy an amp for it.

After I ordered it (yes, just one), I continued reading comments about how surprised people were that they actually owned a Behringer piece. Now I am too! And I'm surprised by how much I use it.

Honestly, it's been so long that I've heard an actual Auratone that I can't compare the Behritone to that. BUT, who cares? I use it just the same: to check balances and to start EQing vocals. It's amazing for that.

It doesn't sound great, but it's very satisfying to listen to because you know the mix is gonna translate. While the piece itself might not technically be worth more than $100, it's value is waaay more than that to me for the time is saves me running around listening different systems.

I own a pair of the Behritones C5A and one single C50A.
What I find disturbing is the following: All three speakers produce nasty distortions/unpleasing harmonics in the 100-500 Hz area or so...
This can simply be validated by listening to the following Song-Intros:
MC 900 feet Jesus - But If You Go (The Synth-Bass should sound clean)
Nightmares On Wax - Argha Noah (The pulsating Synth-Line has a rough tone to it, but no distortion)
Grace Jones - My Jamaican Guy (same as above)

The Behritones (at least the three I own) behave the same way. They sound quite good, but, especially at very low levels, these distortions drive me nuts...

It sounds like if the speakers were de-centered and the coil was grinding the air-gap. I blame the built-in Class-D Amp to produce these effects.

Finally I cut the Speaker-Wires and connected them to an old HiFi-Amp - all Problems gone, including the absurdly steep Highpass-Filter of the C5A...

I've had a pair of C5a's for a couple of years. They sound like crap. Just like they are supposed to. No problems. Run them everyday. They work every day. They were cheap. I was glad. And because gear sluts says that my review was too short and that I have to add 200 more characters, let me say that they are very black.

I can confirm what a previous reviewer said about the internal Class-D Amp. It seems to be low quality, low level distortion with a steep low end cut.

The internal amp actually broke on me!!!

Instead of bothering to diagnose and fix the amp I decided to bypass it and hook up the speaker to a Hafler P1000, I already had.

Very usable across the range now cleaner in general; closer to what you'd expect from Avantones. Both HF and LF seem to taper off more subtly now.

Recently purchased a single Avantone Active Mixcube & was very unhappy with the sound. They sounded too full, muddy/boosted in the 200-500hz range and did not give me that mono, midrange only tool I was hoping for. Despite persevering with them, they just were not working for me.

I went online, searching for some orginal Auratones and could not find any in the UK. I then looked for some other options and found the Behritone C50a, Behritone C5A & Fostex 6301b. I could not find that much, if any user reviews on the Behritone's or any Youtube reviews. I purchased the Behritone C5A anyway, thinking that they would be best for tool for what I wanted.

I can honestly say, that I am over the moon with these.

1) The transient response of drums instantly comes through letting you know if your kick is knocking too hard or soft.

2) The levels of snares, synths, vocals are right there in your face and shows you if something is too loud or quiet.

3) Bass - If you cannot hear the bassline on the C5A, then yep you guessed it, your not going to hear it on your laptop, mobile phone, TV etc

4) No sub frequencies & no higher frequencies, just the midrange. I can eq the midrange frequencies/instruments (most important) on this little monitor with ease.

5) The build quality is very good and feels robust. The monitor weighs quite abit (heavier than the Avantone).

6) Volume - With the volume knob at 0 its plenty loud enough and I would say just as loud as the Mixcube even though the C5A only has a 30w amplifier.

7) No humming! My Avantone Mixcube had a annoying low level hum and this bugged me, alot! The C5A has some noise but very slight and again, NO HUM

8) Inputs - XLR, RCA, 1/4 jack

9) The C5A only cost me £85!!!! The Avantone Mixcube was £250 and the vintage Auratones are £500+ if you can find one!

All in all, this little monitor the Behritone C5A is a no brainer & I would recommend it to any serious engineer, especially over the Avantone Mixcube.
