TRUE Systems Precision 8 by RobAnderson
The TRUE Systems Precision 8 is a 1 RU 8-channel microphone amplifier with a number of great features that seem to have been geared twoards the on-location recordist.
Firstly, it features 8 clean-sounding mic amps in a single rackspace, with an enormous amount of gain. One of the best features is the redundant outputs so that one could feed two recorders simultaneously - one is on DB25, the other on TRS connectors.
Channels 1 and 2 can be used as a Mid/Side instead of discrete outputs. There is a peak light on each channel that can be calibrated to a level of your choosing. The peak is an infinite hold, so that your eye will always see if the level has reached.
There are only two "cons" to this unit - 1 is that it runs quite hot, so it is necessary to take into account a way to cool it during long sessions. The other is the minimum gain setting is 16 dB, and there is no pad built-in to the unit, so it is necessary to have on-hand some inline attenuators to tame those really hot sources.
All-in-all, the P8 is a good value for the price, and can be a great asset to an on-location rig.
