Sennheiser HD 650 by pearldrum944
I bought my Sennheiser HD650 headphones for a critical listening class in college, about 5 years ago. For the class we were given the option of the HD650, or HD600. I was told that the HD600's had slightly less low end, and were a little more neutral...but the HD650's could make listening a little more of an enjoyable experience. I knew that I could overcome the slight 60hz bump in the frequency response for checking mixes, so I opted for the 650's.
The first time I plugged these headphones in, I loved them. This was at a time when I was in school, so did not have a professionally designed, acoustically treated control room as I do now. These headphones made me just want to sit and listen to my ENTIRE music collection over again, as I was hearing many things I had never heard before. I even broke out my old CD player as I grew tired of listening to 192k mp3s from my computer. Today, these headphones stay hooked up to my console in my control room. I always check a mix on these headphones to make sure it sounds how it should in these cans: "correct". Mostly I find that I am checking that the highs and lows are where they should be.
I use these headphones every day in the studio, and it has been one of my favorite purchases. They have held up well. After 5 years of use, some of the paint is flaking off of the rear side of the top of the head piece. Other than this slight visual imperfection, flawless. They survived a 4 foot drop onto tile floor as well.(that client didn't get to use them again.)
So here are my pros and cons
Pro:
Amazing clarity
Extremely comfortable, I forget I have them on
Don't have the headphone "feel" as most headphones do, I think because the speakers are larger, and further away from your ears...they sound a little more natural, like a set of speakers
Con:
A little on the pricey side...but certainly aren't HD800 money
Since they are open backed, they aren't great for tracking or in other quiet situations
Require a bit more power than other headphones
