Mackie 1402VLZ4

Great replacement for our 30 year-old CR1604 in a home studio. Sounds very musical, and versatility can't be beat in a compact mixer. If you push the faders to the limit you'll hear noise but don't know if this is better or worse than other inexpensive mixers.

We use it mostly for mixing down analog instruments with output from a computer interface. The separate Control Room outputs and fader are a big plus.

The Alt 3/4 outputs (selected when you press Mute on a channel) are great for recording one or more channels while listening to the whole mix—the control room outputs can consist of the main and/or Alt 3/4 busses, separately selectable. Optionally you can return this to the main output bus.

Because the monitor speaker and headphone outputs are tied to the same fader, I used the 1/4" Main outputs to drive a separate headphone amp with adjustable volumes. The XLR Main outputs go back to the computer interface for recording the mix.

So far haven't had occasion to try the mic inputs but reportedly the Onyx preamps are excellent.

Glad I got this little guy. Perfect replacement for our "old faithful" CR1604.
