M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8r

I picked this up as vintage gear in 2018 after using its little sister the Fast Track Ultra for the last 8 years. I just discovered before I bought it that it has the very same GUI or Driver control panel and they are both now not receiving any further updates.

I really like these interfaces. This in particular adds a lot of swagger to my miniature studio.

I originally bought it so I could add a 3rd or 4th instrument anytime I felt like it. The bang for buck value of this thing is unbeatable. You should be able to find one for 200 USD in 2018.

There are a lot of people complaining about BSOD (blue screen of death) in Windows with this device, but I have learned what causes this problem, and survived better than the rest to tell the tale.

I gave it a 4 out of 5 for ease of use, because of the BSOD which is caused by USB connector issues coupled with CPU overdriving. Also gave it the 4 out of 5 cause you have to use XLR for the 6 rear only inputs or it won't use the preamps (the front/rear 1 & 2 inputs are preamped from the front side with just a 1/4" in). So buyer aware of this fact before you go purchasing a bunch of 1/4 inch input cables.

This is probably if not THE best, then ONE of the best, (along with its little buddy the FTU) interfaces you can get in 2018. Don't be snookered by interfaces with fewer inputs and similar design flaws. EVERY interface will give a BSOD in Windows when pushed thru USB alongside cameras in a hub, and with the CPU maxed out too much.

Lot of complaints about this being unusable in Windows 10. Those people need to reinstall their Windows or something. I have never had the least bit of difficulty driving this in Windows 10. Never had any problems with device recognition or driver installation on any of my Windows 10 Laptops.

Like I said I bought this originally for the extra hardware inputs and my own familiarity with the driver program interface of the FTU and FTU 8R, which allows 8 software return channels per pair of hardware outputs. It is a great interface as long as you keep an individual 2.0 or 3.0 USB port on your machine to run it into and keep a lot of CPU on hand.
