The Scope:

Umlaut Audio recently introduced ARPS, a percussive virtual instrument capable of performing a myriad of rhythmic patterns.

The Interface:

There are four main ARP core engines, Kicks, Mids, Percs, and Ticks. Each of the ARP engines have special effects consisting of Filter, Distortion, Lo-Fi, Transient, Compressor, Delay, and Spatializer. Each of the effects have their own individual set of controls. The Arp steps have a range of 2 – 64 steps with additional controls for adjusting the Rate, Release, Swing, Octave, and Repeat. Notes can be played individually or can be arpegiatted. A Latch mode is also available. The Mode option offers Up, Down, Up & Down, Down & Up, Random, and Chord.

The Scores

Sound Quality: The sound quality is exceptionally good with a wide range of available sounds that are mapped across the keyboard. There are very few presets, only five for each of the four ARP core engines. What makes up for the small amount of content is the vast range of sounds that can be custom sculpted via the use of the onboard effects. I experimented with various ARP sequences and found ARPS to be quite versatile. I managed to produce very realistic and convincing sounds emulating a ticking mechanical wrist watch, a time bomb, or a wall clock with little effort. This plugin is also quite useful for creating futuristic industrial machinery type sounds that can be implemented seamlessly into many musical tracks and sound environments.

Ease of use: The user interface is very straight forward with no extensive sub menus. Everything can be easily located at a glance.

Features: Each of the four ARP engines, ( Kicks, Mids, Percs, and Ticks), can be played individually or can be layered to create impressive Arp sound combinations and sequences. NKS-ready for full integration with Komplete Kontrol keyboards and Maschine. I personally would have liked to have seen more content in terms of presets as not everyone has the time to customize their own sounds, but as stated before, the possibilities are quite impressive. An excellent set of special effects, enables the user with full control over the sounds.

Bang for buck: Very good value. Lots of sound possibilities at a fraction of the cost to that of other comparable rhythmic applications.

Overall: ARPS is a very useful plugin and highly versatile. A wide range of rhythmic sounds can be produced with ease and can be used in a large assortment of musical applications. Recommended for musicians of all genres, beat makers, sound designers, and composers.
