The Scope:Umlaut Audio recently unveiled Jungle Loops, an acoustic percussion sample library consisting of small to medium hand-percussion instruments with wood-like tones. The libraries consist of realistic, high quality Loops & Phrases for each of the 13 instruments. Jungle Loops was inspired by Umlaut Audio's custom instrument Composer John Debney for the movie Jungle Book.
The Interface: The user interface is superimposed on a pleasing graphic that depicts a lush jungle with a flowing river which is cascading over large rocks. Here you’ll find the name of the instrument along with the particular controls. There’s also a graphical schematic of a Sequencer in the middle of the user interface with controls for Volume, Pan, and Pitch as well as Half, Normal, and Double key switches.
The Instruments: The percussion instruments consist of the following:
Long Drum High
Long Drum Low
Slit Drum 1
Slit Drum 2
Slit Log Low
Slit Log Small
Effects: There are seven well rounded special effects available consisting of Filter, Distortion, Lo-Fi, Solid EQ, Compressor, Delay, and Convolution.
* Please see below to view screenshots of the user interface.
Sound Quality: The sound quality of the samples is excellent and well suited for creating realistic ethnic atmospheres. One of the first things that came to mind while exploring the sounds was the popular television series, Survivor! Right away, I could think of dozens of uses for both television and cinematic scores.
Ease of use: The user interface is pretty straight forward, everything is available on the main panel.
Features: Jungle Loops has a great set of simple, yet powerful features to totally customize your sounds. One of my favorites is the Convolution special effect which is like having a reverb on steroids. You can combine other special effects to your instruments for even greater sound possibilities. Another feature that I like, is the step sequencer’s ability to adjust the volume, pan, and pitch of each individual step. Loops and Phrases can be used individually or multi-tracked on your favorite DAW. Jungle Loops is NKS ready so if you have a Komplete keyboard, you have full access to the color light guide in which you can visually see what’s mapped to the keyboard. Key switches are also color mapped on the keyboard. If you don’t own a Komplete controller, not to worry, you can make use of the light guide within the Kontakt interface. Jungle Loops has a small CPU footprint so it’s not a problem if you have an older computer with a small amount of RAM.
Bang for buck: Outstanding value. What makes Jungle Loops very valuable, is the flexibility of the percussive instruments coupled with the onboard special effects that can deliver a wide range of custom sounds.
Overall: Jungle Loops is a great tool to have in your sound set arsenal at a very affordable price. The samples are highly customizable and with the onboard effects, there’s a lot of versatility in the sounds that can be achieved. Recommended for sound designers, beatmakers, and musicians wanting to add wood-like, ethnic percussive sounds to their tracks.
