D.A.V Electronics BG8 by ruby06
The bg 8 comes in a very unspectacular light box. I was very sceptical about it, especially when it sits next to the Millennia HV 3 8. When I opened the box I was very surprised: Everything looks very clean and with high quality but surprisingly less components inside (especially for a 8 channel preamp). The DAV BGs are transformerless and the BG8 is not a discrete design. However the DAV sounds phantastic! When comparing to my other preamps it sounds a bit like an Millennia M2B. We do a lot of orchestral recordings and I compared the HV3 8 with the BG8. The BG 8 has a little larger than life sound but still very neutral. The Millenia HV3 sounds a little faster, like it has "more muscles".
Some interesting information on the side.
This preamp has its roots in the Decca studios. DAV electronics has Mick Hinton designing the BG products. He is the same man who designed them at Decca. Everybody who has some Decca recordings knows what kind of sounds they were looking after. And you can find this particular sound in the BG8 as well.
My conclusion is, that this little amp is a perfect multichannel preamp for location based recordings.
The only week spots I found: no power switch and no XLR outs.
