Back in March I recorded a Sacred Harp Convention of approximately 200 singers
and best result was a 2ft spaced pair of Josephson C617 omni’s with piggy-backed
MKH8040 cardiods with mics 14’ above the center of the square and aimed at diagonals of the square (for those unfamiliar, Sacred Harp aka Shape Note singing is done in a square with
one part, Treble (soprano)/Bass/Tenor/Alto, on each side of the square facing the leader in the center.). The best sound came from approximately 2/3 omni plus 1/3 cardiod).
Here’s a link to a 1644 version (original recorded
at 2496 via Gordon preamps to SD788.) of part of the hymn, “New Jerusalem”.
